Have 98 Toyota Tacoma, the transmission is hard to get into 2nd gear and feels rough going in. Also 3rd to 4th doesn't align well always. Is this clutch, syncro gears or linkage?

It sounds like your synchro's are going. You may try changing the gear oil (75w-90). Use a GL-4 type oil.

'95 Tacoma 5speed no 3rd or 4th gear. It feels like it goes in but there is nothing there, it's as if in neutral in those gears.

Make sure that the shifting lever is not restricted and not allowing the gears to engage. Other than that, sounds like you have an internal transmission problem.

What causes engine vibration in 3rd and 4th gears?

When synchros go bad they will NOT cause a vibration. They will make a kerchunk noise when you try to shift to that gear. I know. I rebuilt my transmission (Type: W59) because of bad synchros in 2nd gear.

I would look for bad U-Joints, or a bad carrier bearing. This could also happen if you went to a tire size larger than 31x10.5. The 2.7L 3RZ doesn't produce enough HP to run 33's. It will bog down on a hill in 3rd. You could also have some bad half-shafts up front. If you keep the hubs locked they may be dragging you down.

Are your tires chopped?

Manual Transmission loud metal noise 5th gear doesn't work

check the drain plug magnet for metal bits . If any the box has to come out 4.th gear is straight shaft connection and 5 gear connects from the cluster shaft up to the out put shaft . On either side is a rear main bearing and from your description if that bearing is failed then the 4th gear syncro will not align properly and the gear for 5th will be out of alignment so the syncro to work will not work

Toyota Yaris SR over reving when changing fom 1st to 2nd less from 2nd to 3rd.

Retrieve the engine and transmission fault codes, if any. There could be many reasons. But to start with, check the transmission oil level and catalytic converter.

What is D3 in autogear

it will be more noticeable at highway speeds if you use D3 as the transmission won't use the 4th and 5th gears. This will result in higher engine revving (watch the tach) and will use more gas. The car may feel like it's accelerating faster at these speeds, but at the same time, engine braking will slow it more when you take your foot off the gas.King Scanner G3 for Toyota Tis and Honda Him

D3 exists if you are going up (or down) a mountain and want the engine to be limited to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear rather than "searching" for the best of 3rd, 4th, and 5th frequently (although with the grade logic Honda employs this has never annoyed me). ymmv (your mountains may vary).

D3 Doesn't hurt anything; slightly more fuel consumption as the engine will rev higher, but better to be in "D" for normal driving and let the transmission use its full range of gears

Only runs in 1st and 2nd gear and reverse.

This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line
, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Auto Gear hard shift

Either: Your low on transmission fluid, you need to replace the filter, or there's something wrong with the transmission.
