I have recently bought a 2005 Ford Focus TDCi 1.8. In the first week it developed a fault with a loss of power and the 'Engine System Fault' warning light came on. The dealer fitted a new fuel filter but it lasted less than 24 hours before breaking down again with the same problem, except that this time the engine cut out completely and I couldn't restart it and had to be towed home. A local garage eventually managed to start the engine after priming it using a hand pump, there were no error codes retained when he ran diagnostics. The car then ran for six weeks, but I broke down again with the same fault. This time my recovery guy managed to start the car by turning it over and giving the throttle plenty! Again, no error codes. Any ideas anyone?
Yes there is a know problem with the fuel system. fuel pump breaks down, empty your fuel filter into a bowl and check for metalic, if you have this in the filter your pump is F..... along with all the other common rail stuff. expensive job... error codes though, i find that hard to believe, fuel pressure faults will occur, i think you garage does not know what to do. or does not want to tell you the cost of the job and he will be in doubt himself of wether he is right..... was you engine coil light flashing at any point.!!!
Hi those codes are numbers short.
according to the know fault bulletin the codes you need to be looking out for are as follows
P0109, P0191, P0251, P1211, P2288, P2291, If any of these codes are present,m check fuel filter.
regards
thanks will hit em with code request. Is the filter integral with the pump ? local belief is there is no fuel filter (which I just cannot believe - but then I only have a loan car as well!)

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.
When the Check Engine light warning is turned on the computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible faults that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

Thanks for that! My garage is not a ford specialist, just a local guy, so he may not know it is a reported fault or known problem.
The 'Engine System Fault' warning comes up, not the engine coil light. Originally the retained codes were P001 and P006, but on the last two occasions there were no codes retained!
Does that mean anything?
OK, many thanks, I'll look out for that next time the fault occurs!
I have the same problem. I think we should demand a new car. It is their problem!
