Gas tank flap stuck open

The check engin light is illuminated on my 2012 VW Passat. I filled the tank on Sunday and the problem started Monday morning. My fuel economy has dropped. When I opened the gas tank door, I notice there is not tank flap (I can see straight down into the tank). Can the flap get stuck open and cause a secondary air sensor to malfunction?

Remove filler neck and you will see the spring has either broken or been sprung.
Either you can reset the spring or replace it. Best place to find those small springs are on children's toys.

If the flap is intact you can try spraying some wd-40 on its hinge. If its missing you need a filler neck for your fuel tank.

SOURCE: Tank Flap - Electric : Will not open

I have a 2003 passat with the same problem, i noticed that the little nipple on the left hand side that releases to open the flap was inside the hole its self .

The book tells you nothing regarding this and i couldnt find on the internet how to get to it other than taking off the guard above the wheel and getting it that way.

I went out today and took the carpet away from the side of the boot closest to where the flap was.

I then saw the flap solenoid which had 2 little wires and a rod attached. The solenoid or motor as i call it was held on by two little bolts which i took off and had look at it but to be honest i had no idea what so ever as to what it should look like or do ha ha.

The rod that is attcahed to solenoid is the rod that comes through the hole to keep flap closed or to release it. I pushed the rod and couldnt see hyow it would release and hold so i took the rod off the motor and pushed the end of the motor that the hook was attached to and it made a noise i hadnt heard before but it was one of those good noises lol i didnt have any wd40 to spray on it as i used this for something else so i used some vaseline to rub on the end where the hooked rod goes onto and put the rod back on.

I then put the bit that comes through to lock or release into position and then bolted solenoid back in place and connected the wire again went to check thinking i am not that lucky and hey presto all mine needed was bit of lube lol and without the dirt and hassle of taking of the guard above the wheel.

Hope this helps as there is no way of opening this manually as i was told this monday when i called vw.

SOURCE: 96 vw passat door problems. driver side door wont

Call me 1-336-835-2180 10am-11pm 7 days a week eastern. Ask for R.C. and I'll be glad to tell you what all it takes. If you look at the other doors that will open you will notice a lever on the side of the latch it will release the latch. with the door open flip the latch and open it so you can see how it works. Also you can take the door panel partly loose. You will not get all the screws out. You can get enough out to pull the door panel out and reach into the door, pull the rod from the door handle and open it. Once the door is open there is a torque bit screw in the end of the door that holds the outside door handle on take it out, pull the door handle out and you will find a pin out or broke in the door handle. Take a handle on the door that works so you can see the difference. To do the back door on a 4 door you have to take out the interior panel that the top holder of the seat belt goes through to get to the screws in the end of the door panel just to get the interior door panel off to reach in. You can replace the rool pin with a screw, but be sure it's tight because it will back itself out and you'll have to do it all again. Been there and done that. Ha Ha. If you need more than this just call. I'm in North Carolina.

SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

Yes, the flap must seal the hole or the Vapor system will generate an error code. The Flap may be damaged or the spring has broken or as you mentioned, if it's really cold, could be frozen open. I have a 2008 VW Jetta TDI @ 82K miles. Check engine light comes on and sometimes off. Says issue with evap system? The car starts just fine and runs, accelerates, and idles without issue. However, when I...

There are a few things that can go wrong here. One is a bad gas cap. Dealer charges $45, and AutozoneAz charges $10. Your call there. But first, clean around where the gas cap meets the filler adapter to see if dirt has built up. If so, the gas cap is not making a good seal. On a hot day, you should hear the gas escape from the tank when opening the cap (well, on a gas car, maybe not a diesel). There is also a valve that is near the air intake box that may need replacing. It is a very easy replacement and does not require a mechanic to do. It is different from car to car, but on my Passat it's called an N80 valve. It opens a line to the evap canister to get that fuel to burn.

Worst case would be the canister as it is about $200. So do the cleaning first, then the gas cap, then the N80 (or whatever it's called on a Jetta TDI).

My check engine light came on shortly after filling my gas tank. I did put more gas in the tank after the gas pump clicked that it was full. what could be the problem

If your check engine light came on shortly during or after filling the tank, and then goes off later, thats quite a relief. It really happens, and lucky for you dont have to bring your vehicle to a shop if the light persisted. Here are some tips regarding this issue: turn off the ignition switch before opening the fuel tank cap. Turn on and start only after the caps are properly closed. The scenario is that, whenever we refill gasoline on the tank, the pressure and the vacuum inside the tank are being upset, sometimes creating some kind of signal glitch which may be misinterpreted by the engine control module, and thus shortly illuminate the check engine light. I hope this lightened you up. Have a safe trip. : )

I have a 2006 VW Passat 2.0T. My check Engine light is on and when it was scanned I got two codes 171 & 455. What does this mean? I do notice that when I fill up at the gas station, my car acts like it...

Engine is running lean and there is a leak in the evap system, most likely due to purge valve stuck open. This is causing the engine to flood after a fill up. This is a known problem with the 06 Passat. See post here: http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/2006-to-2010-volkswagen-passat-2.htm

Dodge dakota 2005 -check engine light(gas cap)gas cap was replaced.Fuel spills out when filling tank.Fuel lines were smoked and no clog was found.

There is a check valve in the filler hose to stop fuel from coming out seems yours might be stuck , run a metal coat hangers inside the filler neck while prying open the little fill flap. see if that helps OR you are not or have no VENT to AIR in your evap system causing excessive tank pressure.

New battery in 03 VW Passat, engine turns but will not start.

Possible flooding, cold weather can freez open injectors causing them to leak into the cylinders. Press the gass pedal all the way to the floor and crank the engine for no more than 60 seconds. The cylinders will clear themselves allowing proper mix of air/fuel and should start easy. If that does not solve please specify if the engine is 1.8l or 2.8l.
