Instrument cluster does not work. No gauges, speedometer, tach,

I have tried another cluster, a new PCM, the fuses are okay. I can't find anything to tell me what each wire is on the 2 plugs for it. The cluster lights works, o/d works, horn works, air bags work, however the cruise control does not work

  • pianojon Mar 29, 2009

I have checked all of the obvious fuses, relays, and connections. If I knew where the ground wire and voltages in each wire of the 2 plugs in the back of the cluster that would tell me a lot.

  • pianojon Mar 30, 2009

I have manual. The wiring schematic only goes to a rectangle for the cluster. It does not give the individual wires in the plugs. There are approx. 32 wires total. Also, why would you give me a diagram for a Nissan. The Dodge Chrysler mechanics have access to the individual wires on the plugs I am talking about. Are you all just backyard mechanics or what??

Where is the speed sensor located on a 2006 Lincoln mark LT pickup

The instrument cluster receives the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) signal which originates in the ABS module and is transmitted to the PCM over the communication network. The PCM monitors the VSS input and sends it to the instrument cluster over the communication network. With the VSS input, the instrument cluster provides the speedometer with a corresponding pointer movement.
  • The speedometer/odometer is inoperative
  • Powertrain control module (PCM)
  • Instrument cluster
  • Go To Pinpoint Test F .

Pinpoint Test F: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative
Normal Operation Vehicle speed information is sent to the powertrain control module (PCM) from the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module. The instrument cluster receives the vehicle speed data from the PCM over the communication network.
    Possible Causes
  • PCM
  • instrument cluster
PINPOINT TEST F: THE SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER IS INOPERATIVE Your best bet ,have the vehicle hooked to a professional scan tool an checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's , before you replace parts that are not needed.
Test Step Result / Action to Take F1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PCM SELF-TESTS
  • Check for the recorded PCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Are any PCM DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual to continue diagnosis of the DTCs.

No
For an inoperative speedometer, GO to F2 .

For an inoperative odometer, GO to F3 . F2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SPEEDOMETER GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
  • Key in ON position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command.
  • Select the instrument cluster speedometer gauge active command. Trigger the active command on. Observe the speedometer gauge. The speedometer gauge should start 16 km/h (10 mph) and move to 194 km/h (120 mph).
  • Is the speedometer gauge within specifications?
Yes
GO to F4 .

No
GO to F5 . F3 MONITOR THE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT DISPLAYS
  • Key in ON position.
  • Monitor the compass, air temperature and message center functions of the integrated circuit display.
  • Do the compass, air temperature, or message center displays operate correctly?
Yes
GO to F5 .

No
Go To Pinpoint Test U to continue diagnosis of the integrated circuit display. F4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the PCM connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Section 303-14 . TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. F5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster in this section. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.

My 2000 Chevy s15 Rpm and Gas Gauge is not working

I didn't see an s15 in that model year, in my database?
If the speedometer works but the tach doesn't, I think something is wrong with instrument cluster?
GM has had a problem with fuel gage sending units. The sending units are not hard wired to instrument cluster, they send signal to pcm, the pcm sends serial data to instrument cluster, telling the cluster the gage settings.
It may be possible to use different size resistors in place of the fuel level sending unit, to see if fuel gage reacts properly to different resistors, if the gage reacts properly, then I think the problem is the fuel gage sending unit.

Tach, speedometer and the fuel gauge does not work

there are 2 fuses for the cluster
did you check them first?
the cluster has a self test.
run that yet
http://www.morris4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm?utm_source=cj#service
see 1996 here.
instrument chapter.
see self test. bingo.
then see wiring page. (posted over 200 times here)
scan the pcm for network bus error to cluster? yet?

8w-40-1 (wiring chapter)

pdc fuse 16 and jb 9

fuses good.
if the self test passes? (it will i bet with fuses ok)
that means the PCM can;t talk to the cluster on the
CCD bus network
and will have scan errors. so scan it
why wait?

all meters run off of live data transmitted to cluster
same as your screen you are looking a now. (PC)
some lamps are hard wired, like ABS. etc.
but above is gauge answers.

ive told this story now many times.. here.

Instrument Panel keeps blowing fuses

It isn't the ground; if you lost the ground, it wouldn't be blowing fuses-it wouldn't be doing anything.
There may be a short in the panel, or in the wiring to it. You will need to pull the instrument cluster out to investigate. If the wiring and connectors look good, probably need a new cluster.

Fuse IPC/HVAC BATT 10 amp located in the left IP junction block . Do you know where this junction box is ?
Does the heater an A/C work ? If so the fuse isn't the problem .
Speedometer
The speedometer is a road indicator. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is a permanent magnet generator which is located on the transaxle. The VSS sends an input to the PCM whenever the transaxle differential carrier turns. The PCM then buffers the VSS signal. The PCM transmits the VSS signal to the following components at 4000 pulses/mile through CKT 817:
• The instrument cluster
• The cruise control module
• The radio (uplevel)
The instrument cluster uses the input in order to indicate the vehicle speed on the speedometer.
Instrument Cluster Indicators
The BCM controls the instrument cluster indicators through the SPI serial data communication bus. Refer to Body Control Module System Check in Body Control System.

I have an 04 chevy silverado v6.3, and my dash doesnt work none of the gauges speedometer, fuel, nothing works, but they did yesterday. What could this possibly be?

The stepping motors in the gauge go bad, but uusually they fail gradually, or just one, The dealer charges $300 to fix, do a search on ebay for CHEVY SILVERADO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER for cheaper repair options. gauges are powered by the pcm, no fuses inbetween, so if it runs ok, problem is in cluster
