While driving my Stratus, I heard the chime that usually precedes the illumination of the engine light. No light appeared and after driving a short distance, the car bogged down and died. When turning the ignition, the car would crank but not start. I noticed that I could not hear the fuel pump turn on as it normally does. I checked all the fuses and even swapped relays but same result. At this point I had the vehicle towed to my home. Once off the truck, I decided to try it again and it started. A little hard at first but once it got fuel it was OK. The car now starts right up, sounds great and you can clearly hear the fuel pump prime when turning the key to the start position. Obviously I'm a little hesitant to drive it because I have no clear reason for the failure. Any suggestions as to the possible cause would be appreciated.

Start with changing the fuel filter. If that doesn't do it, then change the fuel pump.

I would look for spark, you may have an ignition problem. it would be a sensor that goes into your distributor, the plug should be a round one with i believe 4 wires.

Does it sound normal when it cranks over? Or does it sound like it is crankung faster then usual?

Are you sure the chime wasn't the low fuel warning chime?
I can't be sure what it was, because no light came on. I had just under 1/4 of a tank of fuel and had just made a right turn. I did put a couple of gallons of gas in it while I was waiting for a tow on the off chance the fuel gage wasn't working properly.
