I have had the almost same problem twice. A 'thump', like the engine missed a fire and tach drops. Seems OK after restart. Electrical? Timing chain slip?
Has 135,000 mile. Any clues?

88 - 89 festiva "L" models came with a 4 speed. Unless it has been swapped with a 5 speed from an 88 - 89 "LX" or a 90 - 93 festiva 4 gears is all you have. Well did you use 10w - 30 if so then switch to the 5w-30 the reason the car needs a lighter oil in the cold weather. i usually use 10w during the summer helps keep the engine a little cooler on longer runs but during the winter u need the lighter oil so it don't have to work so hard to keep going.

That most likely would be a fuel system problem. Other, less, likely would be transmission. Does the vehicle run OK at idle?
