The reason can be faulty fuel supply system. There might be any damaged fuel supply line which may be leaking the fuel. Check for the damaged pipe and repair or replace the pipe. It is not necessary that engine is burning gas fast, leak in fuel supply line may also result in more gas consuming vehicle.

SOURCE: 2002 pontiac sunfire has check engine light

Your problem is typical for these cars. The throttle position sensor is bad. Go to Auto Zone and have them check the codes to confirm this. i've seen this many times, that's usually the problem. It makes the car feel like the brakes are on. Hope this helps. Let me know. Phil

check the fuel line hose near the fuel regulator for wear as they tend to leak or corrode causing a gas smell inside the car. My 2000 Kia Sportage just had the same problem with the gas smell inside the car.

SOURCE: 03 honda Odyssey gas smell and check engine light

I've got a '99 Oddy with the same symptom of gas odor inside and outside of the vehicle. Gas cap was secure and the level of fuel made no difference, so by process of elimination, I checked and followed the fuel lines and made sure there were no cracks that I physically could put an eye and hand on and eventually ended up at the fuel injectors and fuel rail. From there, all you need to do is remove the plastic cover plate from the intake plenum and the injectors will be exposed as well as the fuel rail. Turn the car on and wrap some paper towel over your hand like a mitten and run it over the suspected areas. You'll either find your leak there or the fuel filter located under the rear sliding doors.

SOURCE: car is jerking engine light is flashing and smell gas

With modern cars it is bad when the engine light just comes on and the vehicle does something very different. It should not be driven. If the car is smelling of fuel and jerking it is because it's miss-firing (i.e. one or more cylinder is not getting spark but is getting fuel). This can be anything from electrical/electronic to mechanical like a broken rotor cap (as an example). The good thing, is that the light is coming on and a mechanic can check the ECU for error codes. Alternatively, you can buy or barrow one your self and check it out on your own (I think even certain auto-part stores will check it for you as long as you get in the zone;). 1996 is a good year for that since that is when OBDII started and all vehicles started using the same port to check for issues.

SOURCE: Shaking engine, weak power, blinking check engine light

You have a bad coil pack, they usually crack from age and heat. It's best to replace them all. Check for a VW recall on this item.

Smel of fuel throgh the exhaust

Gas Smell from Exhaust Sometimes you may find that the exhaust smells like gas. This is normally a problem with the air and fuel mixture as your fuel injector may be sending too much gas through the engine and not all is burning. This can easily be fixed by having your engine properly tuned. You also may not be using the correct brand of gasoline. Therefore the engine and exhaust are not working properly which results in gas like odors emerging. You may also find that the fuel injector is clogged and needs cleaning. Another cause of this gas smell is a stuck choke if you have a carburetor.

Bad petrol smell

In most cases smelling gas inside the car comes from air entering the venting system from the engine compartment. Just a few drops can cause a strong smell. And a small leak may be tough to find.
It could be excess fuel going out the exhaust pipe, but your check engine light should be on if that were the case.

Why does the van smell like gas when i come to a stop

If the engine is buring oil, it usually smells like burned toast. Check the oil level on the dipstick to see if the oil is low (add oil as needed to bring it back up to the full mark. DO NOT let the engine oil level get too low or serious engine damage will result!. Do a compression check or leak down test to diagnose worn pistons or rings. The underlying cause may be worn or broken piston rings, worn or damaged cylinders, worn valve guide or valve guide seals. A PVC valve could also be at fault leaking oil into the intake.

Starts to vibrate while driving, check engine

The reason your check engine light comes on is that the system is letting you know there is a problem, and it SHOULD be stored so that a hook up to a OBD II reader will locate the code.
The only way you are going to get a burning oil smell is to have engine oil dripping on to a hot surface like an exhaust manifold or pipe.
Check for oil leaks at manifold, valve cover gaskets ect.
How long does it run again after it stalls ?

Rotten egg smell??? Thats smell could be either from a bad 02 senser or a totally clogged catalytic converter...not terribly expensive to replace. As far as the engine shaking, and it not going quick out of the stop light, I'd pull my tranny dipstick and smell the fluid and check for a buring smell and or the color. You want it to be a light red color. You may have an internal transmission issue. You said you got "fluild" out of your tailpipe, was it just water, or was did it have a scent to it. You really should have the car checked out, with those symptoms that you listed you could do more damage by still driving it that way.
