2005 Ford 500 with broken torque strut. How to replace?

Torque strut, also called upper motor mount by some needs to be replaced. This is a verticle part near the motor intake and also attached to a bar on the car frame. How do you replace it? Any suggestions for obtaining a replacement discount part, dealer is quoting 300+ for the part alone?

Mine is worn out as well. If i hit the gas hard, the transmission jumps back and forth. Really bad design. It looks like only 4 or 5 bolts and it will come off.

Great suggestion from Mechanics 2U. I just ordered from Rockauto and will be installing upon delivery. Quote to fix from Auto shop was $475.00. Thanks so much for the info.

This is a common problem on these cars. Buy a torque arm bushing for a 1998 Volvo v70, cut out the inner section of your broken bushing leaving the outer rubber in the mount, then press the volvo bushing in. the holes line up perfectly and it is stronger than the stock bushing. So it will last. You will spend no more than $20 for this. You can get them at rockauto.com for under $5.

This an awesome fix! We had to trim about an 1/8 of an inch off of each side of the volvo mount to fit it in the upper mount but it was a piece of cake. Worke like a charm. Test fit the Volvo part in the old mount to insure a snug fit. I used a royary file in an angle grinder to trim the old rubber out of the original mount until we could press the Volvo mount into it. Thanks for this tip!

Go to a reputable (non dealership) shop and get a second opinion. Unless there was some sort of collision damage, I think it would be very unlikely that the part has gone bad. The only thing that strut does is limit the radial movement of the engine when you are revving the engine. Under normal conditions it should not get a lot of wear and tear. If the part needs to be replaced, you should be able to find it at RockAuto.com or other online part supplier for a fraction of the dealer price.

I had the issue too. definitely not a result of collision damage. where the mount anchors to a bar across the engine compartment, there is an integral rubber bushing with 3 'spokes' and they crumbled on mine, allowing too much movement and eventually a clunk everytime you put it in gear. luckily I had an extended warranty that covered the replacement

I have a 2011 Ford Taurus that I'm trying to change the struts on it but I'm having problems getting it out it off

1. Loosen front strut upper mount nuts. 2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel and tire. 3. Remove wheel hub nut. Do not discard wheel hub nut at this time. 4. Remove front brake caliper anchor plate bolts and position brake caliper and anchor plate assembly aside. Support brake caliper and anchor plate assembly using mechanics wire. 5. Remove brake disc screw, then thread a M10 bolt into brake disc removal hole and tighten to press disc off hub. 6. Remove tie rod end nut, then separate tie rod from wheel knuckle. No special tools are required to separate tie rod from front knuckle; use a mallet to loosen joint. 7. Remove stabilizer bar link upper nut. 8. Detach wheel speed sensor harness from strut. 9. Remove wheel speed sensor from wheel knuckle. Position wheel speed sensor aside. 10. Remove lower ball joint nut, using a crowfoot wrench. Use hex-holding feature to prevent stud from turning while removing nut. 11. Push lower control arm downward until ball joint is clear of wheel knuckle. Use care when releasing lower control arm and knuckle into resting position or damage to ball joint seal may occur. 12. Press halfshaft from wheel bearing and hub, using a suitable front wheel hub remover. Support halfshaft in a level position. Do not allow halfshaft to move outboard. Overextension of CV joint may result in separation of internal parts, causing failure of halfshaft. 13. Remove upper strut mount nuts. 14. Remove wheel knuckle and strut and spring as an assembly. 15. Remove strut to wheel knuckle nut and flag-bolt. 16. Separate strut and spring assembly from wheel knuckle. 17. Reverse procedure to install, noting following: a. Wheel hub nut contains a one time locking chemical that is activated by heat created when it is tightened. Install and tighten new wheel hub nut to specification within 5 minutes of starting it on threads. Always install a new wheel hub nut after loosening or when not tightened within specified time or damage to components can occur. b. Torque lower strut bolt to knuckle to 129 ft. lbs. c. Torque lower ball joint to knuckle to 148 ft. lbs. d. Torque wheel speed sensor to knuckle to 133 in. lbs. e. Torque stabilizer bar upper link to 111 ft. lbs. f. Torque previously removed hub nut to 258 ft. lbs; to seat halfshaft. g. Torque new hub nut to 258 ft. lbs. h. Torque upper strut mount nuts to 46 ft. lbs. i. Torque wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs.

Need torque specs, for 2005 ford explorer. upper and lower strut bolts and for aluminum rims. thank you

2 lower bolts/nuts from the strut to the knuckle should be about 85 ft lbs

the top center nut that holds the strut assembly to that bearing plate assembly should be 76 ft lbs (with the use of a spring compressor of course!)

wheel lug nuts should be torqued to 98-100 ft lbs
