Struts were replaced but there is still squeaking in front

When driving over bumps or turning corners each front side makes a
squeaking sound under the hood -- possibly over the front tire areas.

  • Anonymous Apr 23, 2009

after a winter of horrible pot holes on the snow packed canyon highways, going back and forth to work every day made it sound like there was something loose in my front end suspencion the following summer but no squeak. Until this last winter was over with and now I have the squeaks when Im slowing down and going over any kind of bump or if I turn the wheels. a mechanic called me back and I believe he said that it my Armature Extenders, dont quote me, that needed replaced.

Possible sway bar links, strut bearing plates (they sit on top of the strut), ball joints, tie rod ends. If the you can make it squeek by pushing up and down on the front, have someone do this while trying to narrow where the noise is coming from.

FRONT END SUSPENSION Squeak

It is hard to tell with out more detail as to what makes it squeak. Does it squeak when you hit a bump, or while the vehicle is in motion? To test your struts simply push down on each front corner (above or next to headlight)as to rock the vehicle up and down. Pick a solid part as to not dent it. This is a good way to test your struts. If it goes up in a stiff motion(not rocking) its probably good. If it goes up and down easily and has a lot of play then your struts might need changes. The squeak could also be sway bar bushings as well. If it only squeaks when your in motion it could be your cv axle. If you are still in need please post more detail as to better diagnose the issue.

My front end squeaks when i go over bumps

The last thing you should do is blindly throw money at it without a proper diagnosis, to regretfully learn the problem still exists. Squeaks can be as simple as a worn shock mount, belt slippage, weather stripping in need of lubricant. or a myriad of other things that cost far less than a suspension overhaul.

If it is your shocks/struts, look for the outside of the shock cylinder to appear wet/oily. Hydraulic fluid leaks are proof your shocks/struts need replacing (best to replace all 4, but at the very least the front or rears should be replaced in pairs), and putting it off can certainly lead to a domino effect of failed components (fragged ball joints or tie rod ends, shredded bushings, excessive tire wear, etc..)

If you have a reliable mechanic, that's where I would head. However, if you are more of a DIY'er, grab a friend and head out to a vacant lot with some bumps where you can try and reproduce the problem. While one of you drives slowly, CAREFULLY, the other walk along side and try to pinpoint the source of the squeak (front driver side, rear passenger side, engine compartment, trunk, wherever). Note the speed and direction of turn when the squeak(s) appear, forward AND reverse? Does it happen when air temp is cold/hot, all the time? This is valuable info to relay to a mechanic.

The point is, suspension systems can be wildly complex and sensitive (as any BMW owner can testify), or fairly simple (think mid-70's leaf-sprung trucks).

Another factor is how many miles have you logged on your Kia? If you've hit 80k miles or more, this is when you can expect to start replacing many components that have reached the end of their service life.

With a little more info, a more precise diagnosis can be given.

Squeaking from driver side front tire

Tie rod ends, ball joint, or Upper strut bearing. An alignment shop would give you an estimate for the repair. You can borrow tools to install the bigger stuff at most Autoparts stores. But for all of these repairs you should get an alignment after replacing any one of these parts.

Front driver side suspension knock over bumps

See if you can bounce car and replicate the noise. If you can, you should be able to find it, and put your hand on it. Stabilizer bushing are a place to look, both at the lower a arm and on the frame. If you narrow it down to the strut, it will need to be replaced. The front trans mount also goes bad, try putting it in drive with your foot on the brake and give it some gas and see if the engine moves an excessive amount.
