At first when I started my engine, it started and while the engine runs, I started moving and my fortuner suddenly stopped and the engine died on me. I tried to start it again but all I get is starter cranking but the engine wont turn back on.

Hello Friend,
Pull out the spark pugs so, there is no longer compression. Put a wrench on the crankshaft pully. The engine will turn and the pistons will travel up and down. This is of course it the engine hasn't seized. If the engine turns its the starter. Simple.

i'm sure it's not the starter itself that is the problem, have the stater's solenoid checked...it might be stucked. It's quite a lot of work removing the starter but you can do it if you are willing enough to learn. You just need the right idea and tools to do it. Hope this will help save you bucks!

check for spark first. if theres spark then crack a fuel line while trying to crank to c if theres fuel getting pumped to the injectors. always start with the basics then go from there.

It sounds like it overheated. I am guessing a standard transmission or an automatic that was run in a lower gear?
Diesels cannot rev as high as gasoline engines by their very nature. They act like big compressors and the fuel is ignited by the pressure alone creating enough heat (no spark plugs, and their "glow plugs" are only used for cold starts...when the "wait to start" light is on). When they are over-revved, (two "v"s there, not a "w"), fuel ignites before a valve is fully closed and they will overheat very quickly, and it is possible to have this happen before your coolant gets hot enough to warn you that the engine has overheated.
It sounds like you may not have damaged anything, so you were fortunate to slow down in time before your engine went very much further into a state that is called "preignition" which can cause severe engine damage.
Try taking it a little easier and you should be OK.

Under the stearing wheel there is a fuse box on the left hand side, remove the pannel. Above the fuse box you will see a wiring harness with a box taped to it. Push all the cables in and test it while your doing it.
