Low beam headlight is out, doesn't look like a fuse

My 2000 Subaru Outback low beam headlights are out (yes, both of them). The high beam, fog lights and parking lights all work. I looked at the fuses and none seem to be burned out. Any ideas?

So, I should have added this. It's not the bulbs. I replaced both about three months ago and just put a new one in to see if that was the problem... nothing.

Both lights were dim so I changes them, twice, and still no improvement.

Check the Headlight Switch. If your headlights come on automatically check the headlight sensor and its associated relay.

Replace both bulbs, Osram/sylvania is the manufacture, and are short lived bulbs. Don't get confused with the hi beam bulb there is one of each in the housing
I have a 00 OB too and have never had to replace bulbs like this

  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2009

Hi again, so no low beams, so you have no daytime lights either correct?

I think all OB's have them. Although mine is a Limited. So there is something that switches the low beams from low to daytime (different brightness) This may just be a relay or other device/circuit. Check the relays in the fuse box under the hood, they are marked inside the box lid as the fuses are. I would look at mine but it's out tonight (teenagers)

Hi there,
If you have checked the fuses and they are not burned out, replace them. One could have went out a little bit before the other and you notice them at one time. That is not uncommon for low beam headlights to go out around the same time. Good luck and I hope you get it fixed. Let me know. Have a great night.~MWD

Left headlights

Check your connections at the wiring harness going to headlights for corrosion, sounds like high resistance somewhere, also make sure your ground wires are secure. It wouldn't be the alternator or the battery would be dead and not start the engine. Also shouldn't be any condensation in your head light assembly's or will cause bulbs to blow prematurely.

Left low beam is inoperative. Replaced both bulbs,

I had the same problem with my 2001 Forester. Try this as a low-cost and easy repair attempt: buy brand new fuses and replace both L/H and R/H fuses. If one of your fuses is marginal, your headlights will exhibit this problem. Replacing my headlight fuses with brand new ones solved my situation.

Headlight low beam

Test to see if you have voltage at the bulb connector in low beam position. I'd almost bet that if there is no voltage there for the low beams that you have a bad high/low switch.
