Rattle when decelerating or sometimes in idle

There's a loud rattle from around heat shield or cat. converter when decelerating or sometimes in idle. Happens after the vehicle has been driven several blocks. I banged around with a hammer, but everything seems solid, including cat converter. No check engine light showing. lots on this site about rattle during acceleration, but what about when slowing down?

You need to be very cautious as this culd very easily be mistaken for a loose rod insert...around 2200 rpm hold the idle steady and see if you here a rattle. Then do it again increase slightly then decrease slightly...if you still here it, its possible an insert has came loose from oil run too low or high mileage wear and tare on the crankshaft..if you love it fix it if you dont trade it quickly...GOD bless

SOURCE: the check engine light illuminates,

HI...
THis problem is caused for
Lost of correlation between ACELERATOR PEDAL POSITION
AND THROTTLE ACTUATOR MOTOR.
Because your car has no acelerator cable.
The morer probable is the Trhottle actuator motor come damaged. 90%. 10% the accelerator pedal position.
If you turn of the car it will work OK> for a few time.
But the Service engine soon. will stay on.
Yuo can go to at ANy ADVANCE AUTOPART, AUTOZONE or NAPA AUTOPART. They make a diagnostic free.
If not. I recomend get the car scanned for see exactly why the light come on. and make the right repair procedure.

OK>> I hope this help on your question...

Thank you for use fixya.

SOURCE: Flashing upside down arrow/ slow acceleration

This is a common problem of Volvo S40. You can try this trick to turn off the flashing arrow light.

1) Turn off Engine
2) Turn key to "On" position (Not start the engine), you will see the panel light will on
3) Step on the break paddle
4) Shift the gear from "P" to "L" 10 times
5) Turn key to " Off" position
6) Now you can start the engine.
7) If doesn't work, you can repeat the procedure.

Hope this tick help
Good luck

SOURCE: Loud rattling noise while accelerating

First thing i would try...... ISOHEET, Red bottle..... allows water to be mixed into the fuel and be burnt out of the tank.
get a good qaulity fuel injection cleaner, if you can locate the brand MALCO, i found it quite succesful..... and go with a full tank of premium fuel such as ammoco or shell......do not use yellow bottle of heet

Testimonial: "Might be water in the tank?"

SOURCE: 2006 Dodge Gr. Caravan. Loud humming noise upon

Misalignment of the belt, incorrect belt, worn or loose tensioner, Too tight of an adjustment (many service centers do this on purpose so when the belt breaks in it becomes properly adjusted, I do not believe in this philosophy), The belt is actually one long belt called a serpentine belt.....

The cat converter has started making a vibrating noise do i hsve to replace

A vibrating or rattling sound coming from around the area of your catalytic converter is much more likely to be a problem with the heat shield that wraps around the top of the converter to keep it from damaging the floor of your car. A noisy, rattling heat shield is annoying, but it can be ignored without damaging the car.

A catalytic converter that is failing is likely to make a "whooshing" sound like a muffler with a hole in it. Or, if your cat suddenly plugs up because the inside has come loose, your car will suddenly have no power and you'll have exhaust gas trying to escape from every gasket in the exhaust system. It's a very distinctive (and expensive) sound, compared to a loose heat shield.

Some people simply remove their noisy heat shields. Others pay a welder a few dollars to tack it back into place. It's a simple problem to diagnose, especially if you can put the car on a lift and get underneath it to wiggle parts until you identify the loose section(s).

I hear a rattling noise when im idling and when i press on the gas. I was told it was the heat shield. I have a 2005 dodge neon. I wanted to know how the heat shield was held on. and can it be fixed?

There's alot of shields on those. I've seen the ones bolted to the floor area, along the exhaust tunnel, to rot out. Not the ones bolted to the cat converter, for the most part. Very hard to replace without removing the exhaust first. Then the bolts usually snap or round off, requiring grinding & drilling to replace the bolts. Pain in the **** for anyone. Even me, a Master Tech.

Rattling/clattering exhaust noise from front bottom

It could be all of the things mentioned in your post. A loose/bent/misplaced heat shield will make noise at different engine speeds as various parts vibrate and (((RESONATE))) in harmony with engine speed. Also, a shifted/loose catalyst brick in the converter can be the culprit. If you KNOW for a fact that it IS an internal fault of the converter, it will need to be replaced. Chunks can be broken off as it rattles about and **** sideways downstream in the exhaust. This not only blocks exhaust, but can lead to a dangerous burn-through condition if the piece of hot catalyst wedges in a bend in the pipe where yo do NOT have additional heat shielding.

My 2003 dodge truck makes a rattling noise at 1400 rpms and lower than 30 mph. I've looked at the heat sheilds and tapped on the exhaust to try and recreate the sound but cannot. it is really hard to...

sounds like a bad cat. converter. it could have some pieces of it rattling around anywere between cat and muffler.
also i have a ford ranger that did the same thing and i could not make the noise happen by banging etc i pulled my hair out because it was a short lived but loud noise at about 1500 rpm. finally i got some bailing wire and wrapped the heat shields with it one at a time.test drove and the noise did not vanish but it was greatly reduced. sure enough the heat shield on top of the cat had a spot weld that broke. took it to midas and had weld it up for me.

Rattling of catalytic converter heat shield

If it is the heat shield , any muffler shop can put a couple of welds on it. Could also be that the cat converter is destroyed inside with pieces of it ratling around. In that cast a new cat is the only answer.

Exhaust pipe rattles when car idles. Had muffler

Check the heat shield on the Catalytic Converter, after a few years they start to rust off and rattle. Crawl under the Pathfinder and bang along the Converter and muffler area and see where it's coming from.   Good chances are, it's from the heat shield since you already had everything changed from the Cat back.
Good luck and hope this helps.

My subaru forester has a rattle in the catalytic converter can it be repaired

I bet its just a the heat shield on the catalytic converter. Subaru uses very thin metal and the heat shield is bolted as opposed to welded together. This rattle is extremely common on subys.

mrmopar is right that you should replace it.

however there is a quick fix that will stop the noise. Go pick up a 6" stainless steel hose clamp at the hardware store. put the hose clamp around the cat. It should be obvious whats loose when you look under the car.

if you are a little handy its not a hard job to do your self. Just 4 bolts. You can get a catalytic converter for $200 online. Get the gaskets too. shouldn't take more than an hour or two.

You will need to put the car on jack stands or rhino ramps to get access. Once you are under the car, the parts are easy to get to.

Always, always chock the tires when your under the car. You do not want a car to fall on you.

Engine Rattling

Try checking the heat shield on your exhaust system. You should have one over the manifold and one over your cat converter under the car.
