Not working

  • dgottipati Apr 15, 2009

I have the same problem. speedometer not working.I showed it to a mechanic and he said 3 prong connector that goes in the speed-sensor is been spoiled and its not a part we can buy in autozone or auto parts shop. I need to get that from a similar honda accord which is junked.

But I couldn't find salvage yard with junked honda vehicles.

There is a speed sensor located on the rear of the transmisson, close to the firewall. That should take care of the problem

  • Anonymous Aug 21, 2009

Remove and replace the speed sensor. It's located on the transmisson, near the firewall.

Most of the time it is a cracked solder joint on the IC that plugs into the speedometer head. Especially if reading show 20mpg sitting still and just fluctuates when moving. If it works when it gets warm in dash it is sure to be the solder joints.

HI. your vehicle has two sensors that feed information to the speedometer. these sensors are mounted on the transmission itself, and should be inspected for damaged.

Cable Type(If Equipped)

To determine if it is the cable, disconnect the cable casing from the transmission and from the back of the speedometer on the instrument panel. Draw the cable out from inside of the casing. The cable looks like a twisted piece or wire. If the cable is broken or if it is dry or brittle. It probably needs to be replaced. If the cable is intact and the same length as the cable casing, the problem is likely the speedometer head.

I would also advise to check the speedometer gear as well.

The speedometer gear is located on the output shaft. Inspect it for damage.

This gear rarely suffers damage because the gear from the speedometer that meshes with it is usually made of a softer material. Sometimes, the speedometer gear on the main-shaft is replaceable. A clip can hold it in place or it can be a pressed fit. A special puller is available to pull these gears on the car.

SOURCE: 96 Accord VSS or Speedometer Head?

The "needle at 20MPH" is a sure-fire indicator -- it's the speedometer head. This is a common problem in this year.

I haven't found a fix other than replacing the speedometer head, sorry.

SOURCE: speedometer works intermittently

hi, sounds like the vehicle speed sensor mounted on the transmission is going bad or loosing signal. generally, honda speedometers work for life, i've only ever replaced one. now, this is a split year so it may have just a cable going to the transmission instead of an electronic sensor. if the cable is loose, this may also cause this issue. you should probably have a professional shop take a look as the speedometer cable/sensor is very buried in the back of the engine compartment under the air intake hose and behind the starter. also, if there is a check engine light on when the speedo stops working, this should be an easy diagnostic for a technician to do, it would likely be the speed sensor causing this engine light.

You need to discharge the AC system and remove the evaporator to replace the expansion valve. No two way about it.

The speedometer of my 96 honda accord is not working. what do you think is the problem?

Quite possibly you have a Broken Inner Cable This is not an expensive fix, and it is relatively easy repair.
To Check and Repair: You must disconnect outer cable-housing @ the tranny - reach in and pull the inner cable out. to Replace, reverse the procedure.

Best of Luck,

96 honda accord speed sensor not working

I guess you mean the speedometer isnt working? It could be a couple of things. 1. the actual speedometer cable is broke. If electronic it is probly your VSS. typically located on the trans towards the output shaft. You will need to ohm it out and check against spec.

The two work in unison. In order to replace the odometer you will need to replace the entire instrument cluster. Hope this helps. Good luck.

How can i fix the speedometer for my car Honda accord 96 model

This model year Honda Accord had a lot of issues with the speedometer head itself.
As a new or rebuilt speedometer is rather expensive I have been replacing these with one from an auto recycler/wrecking yard.
Get the whole instrument panel as it is a lot easier, just a matter of removing the defective unit and installing the replacement assembly.
There is a possibility that the speed sensor may be defective but that will generally turn on the check engine light.

I have a 1994 Honda Accord LX sedan and the speedometer just stopped working. My mechanic just put in a transmission that he bought from a junk yard. How do i fix this problem?

I have a 99 accord and my speedometer and odometer did not work. The problem was the VSS vehicle speed sensor. The VSS is located on the transmission. Once I replaced it everything worked fine.
