could be a bad strut, could be a bad strut mount, could be a bad bushing. get a pair of new quik struts and have them installed, a lube job, and an alignment.
If it is not your brakes, or your rear shoes, being so they have been replaced, you may have a wheel bearing bad in the rear, or you may have a caliper that is not releasing pressure on the slides causing the brake to drag just a little. I think sense it is coming from the rear of the vehicle i am going to lean towards it being a wheel bearing. One more thing you can try, push the emergency or parking brake on half way when you hear the squeak not enough to lock up the brakes but enough so the brakes touch the drum. If the squeak stops then your parking brakes are you culprit!
I have a 2002 saturn vue. Same thing..sounded like a jet engine ...loud humming as I accelerated . It got increasingly worse. It turned out to be the front wheel bearings. Replace them, now the noise is half as loud...have to do the rears also! 93,000 miles on it. Also, don't forget to replace the timing belt. It it goes too long and breaks, it will trash the engine...
There is a TSB for your complaint from Saturn: Here's the jist of it.
Condition: Some customers may comment on a squeak or squeal noise coming from the base of the steering column while turning vehicle. Cause: The squeak or squeal noise may be caused by insufficient lubrication of the intermediate steering shaft-to rubberboot- contact area. you may be able to get it warrantied through saturn. this is the TSB # #03-02-34-002
we have a 2003 saturn vue which we installed new tires on and we noticed a noise about 6 months afterwards. it sounded to my wife and i to be loud road noise from the tires. the car was driven for 6 months and we decided the noise was annoing. had the tires checked only to find it was the left front wheel bearing which was replaced and stopped the noise.
