Windshield wiper linkage ball joint white knuckle cap is broken

My 1999 Forester windshield wipers has plenty of play.

After removing the hood so I can get at the linkage channel better, and removing the passenger side plastic cowl, the motor connection to the linkage was found to be very loose.
The white knuckle cap that snaps over the linkage ball joint, is broken at the split end grippers. This allows the nylon washer to travel too high, and the linkage to float, giving the wiper extra play.

Where can I get a replacment white knuckle cap, or is there another clip-on cap that would replace the white knuckle?.
Replacing the total linkage is not necessary as the wear item in only at this spot.
I'm willing to adapt alternative items that could snap over the ball head.

This is a DIY fix for a dollar. The white plastic caps that join the wiper arms together in the wiper assembly commonly wear and break under normal use. 1984 - 1986 Honda CRX and Civics also used these plastic caps for a short time - much to my dismay. In my 2000 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Forester (should work on 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 models as well), there is an easy DIY solution that will take care of the excessive play in the wiper travel, as well as the common 'wiper clunk'.
Head over to your local auto parts store an purchase a PCV Valve grommet for a Toyota. Part number 42058. These are only a dollar, and are normally stocked on the shelf. If you put the phrase 'pcv valve 42058' into to Google Image Search you will see what I mean. I’m attaching a picture as well.
For installation, gain access to the wiper assembly, I recommend removing the entire assembly (arms and motor) from below the black trim piece under the windshield. Inspect all the joints. If you have a loose joint, remove the white plastic cap and the arm from the ball joint. Slide the PCV Valve Grommet over the ball joint and press the arm into the grommet. This is now a perfect, snug fit. Wiper blades slamming into the car is a thing of the past.

Love BrvLilToastr's solutions. I have the same problem and definitely will do that. I've just temporarily fixed it with a cable tie. Cut a little bit off and "wrapped" it around the neck of the ball joint and put the cap back on so the play isn't that big. But it's a bit dodge and just for now until I get the pvc valve.

I have a 2012 Chevy Malibu and my windshield wipers just stopped working. When I turn on the switch I can hear the motor going; but the arms won't move . Please help

sounds like the linkage came unhooked under the hood. Sometimes you can just pop it back on other times if its broke you will have to install a new linkage.

99 accord, wipers not working but wiper motor is running

Pop off the plastic cover under your windshield that runs the length of your hood. Sounds like your wiper linkage popped off of your wiper motor. These are plastic ball joints. Or if you or a previous owner popped your wiper arms off, they might have stripped because they are aluminum.

The windshield wipers on my 1999 diamante won't work. But when i turn on the windshield switch i can here the windshield motor, running!

their is three main components to your windshield wipers. their is the wiper arms, linkage and motor. Check the linkage at the motor. you can find this ether under the hood or by removing a cover that is between your windshield and hood. The linkage has bolts or allen screws that hold them on the motor and the wiper arms they may be loose. it could also be bushings that are in between the two linkage rods it could be warn out and caused the linkage to seperate. Hope this helps

Ware is the wiper module located on a 2000 crown victoria

Follow the Dark Blue/White wire or Brown/White wire from the Multifunction Switch to the wiper module according to the schematic.
Also, one can trace the wires from the windshield wiper motor to the wiper module by peeling away the wiring loom and looking for a Yellow/Red wire that leads to the module.

After the recent snow, my wipers will not move. the motors are going but the blades do not move. Is this a motor problem or is something out of sync?

You may have broken the linkage between the motor and the wiper shaft. This can happen when trying to activate the wipers with too much snow on the windshield.

Windshield wipers stopped working on 1998 Nissan Sentra. Is it a fuse problem? If so, where is fuse box and which fuse? Is it a motor problem? is this an easy diy fix?

Water can enter and displace the grease in the wiper arm linkage ball joint where the wiper linkage attaches to the wiper motor linkage.

This can result in gradual wear over a period of time inside the joint that could lead to the separation of the wiper linkage assembly from the wiper motor linkage at the ball joint. A loss of windshield wiper function can result when this separation occurs.

To prevent grease from being washed out of the joint, the dealers will modify by adding a water diversion seal that will prevent water from entering the windshield wiper linkage ball joint area.

97 nissan sentra windshield wiper linkage arm disconnected

Most likely you will have to replace the wiper linkage from the center pivot to the left or drivers-side wiper pivot. The plastic piece in the linkage gets brittle over time and breaks down. To save a hassle in the future, replace both linkages. It should be under $20.00 for parts.
