If the part number on the used unit (tag on case) is the same as the old one then no problem other than the used one may be defective, using the incorrect part number will cause no damage just weird problems and trouble codes in some cases

It is always a risk when you run a used ECM. Usually if you get one from a junk yard they test all the circuits out and make sure they are good, but the problem is for how long. it is always my philosophy to use anything brand new when it comes to electrical devices.

Nissan Caravan. What's the problem on it? Idling is good, ignition is good but if I rev it loses power like it will stop. If I'm moving gears are taking time to engage.

If your Nissan Caravan is experiencing issues such as loss of power during acceleration and delayed engagement of gears while driving, it could be indicative of several potential problems. Here are a few possible causes to consider:
  1. Fuel System Issues: A clogged fuel filter or a faulty fuel pump can restrict fuel flow, leading to inadequate fuel delivery to the engine. This can result in a loss of power when revving the engine. Consider inspecting and replacing the fuel filter if it is dirty or clogged. If necessary, have a professional mechanic check the fuel pump's functionality.
  2. Ignition System Problems: A malfunctioning ignition system, such as faulty spark plugs or ignition coils, can cause misfires and result in a loss of power during acceleration. Inspect the spark plugs for signs of wear or damage and replace them if necessary. If the issue persists, have the ignition coils tested and replaced if faulty.
  3. Transmission Issues: Delayed engagement of gears can indicate a problem with the transmission. Low transmission fluid levels, worn clutch components (in manual transmissions), or faulty solenoids (in automatic transmissions) can cause such symptoms. Check the transmission fluid level and condition, and consider having the transmission inspected by a professional if necessary.
  4. Air Intake or Exhaust System Blockage: A blocked air intake or exhaust system can restrict the flow of air and disrupt the engine's performance. Inspect the air filter for dirt or debris and replace it if necessary. Additionally, check the exhaust system for any obstructions or damaged components that may be impeding the flow of exhaust gases.
  5. Sensor or Electronic Control Module (ECM) Issues: Faulty sensors, such as the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), can affect engine performance and cause issues with acceleration. A malfunctioning ECM, which controls various engine functions, can also lead to power loss. Consider having the sensors and ECM checked by a professional using diagnostic tools.
Given the complexity of these systems and the potential for multiple causes, it is advisable to have a qualified mechanic or Nissan dealership diagnose and repair the specific issues. They can perform a comprehensive inspection and run diagnostic tests to pinpoint the root cause of the problems you are experiencing.
Remember to address these issues promptly, as driving with performance problems can lead to further damage and compromise safety on the road.

Where is the transmission ECM on the 2002 Nissan E25

The dealership told me I needed to replace my TCM, so i went ahead and bought a remanufactured one at Auto Zone. Not being too mechanically inclined, Im still wondering if anyone has had any experience pulling one of these out and switching in a new one. I have asked this before but figured my old thread threw people off with title being about the codes instead of a potential resolution. I know Kevq35 wont like this new thread too much(thanks for the only input so far), but I'm just hoping anyone with any advice will throw it out there real quick so I know what I'm getting myself into.

Ecm control switch

No switch just EFI relay to supply power to ECM. If your ECM seems like it's not activating other system like fuel pump relay, ignition coil,etc.etc. check that your immobilizer has been disabled. Some immobilizers will disable the ECU totally. Newer models have RFID type keys that needs programming if damaged. Best to scan your car and get the error codes before replacing anything.

Need to know if after replacing a faulty ECM unit with a used unit, does the replacement unit need to be professionally reprogrammed or serviced in any way?

You should just have the correct ECM and PROM inside of it.
When battery power is removed from the ECM it will reset to factory defaults. When you install it and start the vehicle it may run rough. Some drive and key cycles will "relearn" the ECM.
I have seen a number of vehicles do this just after replacing the battery.

WHERE IS THE KNOCK SENSOR ON A 2006 CHEVY COBALT TO REPLACE IT.

Not related to the O2 sensor. Located on the front of the engine just above the starter KNOCK SENSOR (KS) SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE
The knock sensor (KS) system enables the engine control module (ECM) to control the ignition timing for the best possible performance while protecting the engine from potentially damaging levels of detonation. The ECM uses the KS system to test for abnormal engine noise that may indicate detonation, also known as spark knock.

SENSOR DESCRIPTION
The knock sensor (KS) system uses a flat response 2-wire sensor. The sensor uses piezo-electric crystal technology that produces an AC voltage signal of varying amplitude and frequency based on the engine vibration, or noise, level. The amplitude and frequency are dependant upon the level of knock that the KS detects. The engine control module (ECM) receives the KS signal through a signal circuit. The KS ground is supplied by the ECM through a low reference circuit.

The ECM learns a minimum noise level, or background noise, at idle from the KS and uses calibrated values for the rest of the RPM range. The ECM uses the minimum noise level to calculate a noise channel. A normal KS signal will ride within the noise channel. As engine speed and load change, the noise channel upper and lower parameters will change to accommodate the KS signal, keeping the signal within the channel. In order to determine which cylinders are knocking, the ECM only uses KS signal information when each cylinder is near top dead center (TDC) of the firing stroke. If knock is present, the signal will range outside of the noise channel.

If the ECM has determined that knock is present, it will ****** the ignition timing to attempt to eliminate the knock. The ECM will always try to work back to a zero compensation level, or no spark ******. An abnormal KS signal will stay outside of the noise channel or will not be present. KS diagnostics are calibrated to detect faults with the KS circuitry inside the ECM, the KS wiring, the KS voltage output, or constant noise from an outside influence such as a loose/damaged component or excessive engine mechanical noise.

I did something potentially really stupid - drilled a hole through my key (to hang it because the clip busted) Now, the car will not start, I understand this to be the immobilizer. The car starts but...

You would have to replace the ECM at a minimum and most likely the ECM and the Ignition. You should still be able to get keys for the vehicle with the chip installed but you would have to get them from the dealer. The immobilzer, in order to be of any use, would have to be incorporated into the ECM unit.

91 buick roadmaster lacks power/ major backfire seen in cat

if the catalytic convertor was cherry hot or even close, it is time to get it replaced. what happens is after a while of use it can plug up with carbon and not allow for sufficient exhaust flow causing an extreme loss of power and potential for severe engine damage and possble fire hazard. take it to a trusted muffler shop quick and get their opinion also. this shouldnt cost more then $200 high. cheers

I ignored the alarm in my 2004 Saturn when it went off. From that point on I cannot use my remote to open the trunk, have to use the key. Is it the alarm system or replacing a fuse?

It maybe both. If the alarm is built into the ECM you can try disconnecting the Negetive battery terminal to reset the ECM. Make sure all the fuses are good for the alarm and for the trunk release. If the alram is not incorporated in the ECM remove the in-line fuse from the power line of the alarm to reset the alarm. This should resolve the problem if the problem is the alarm and not the release.

I have a 1.8L 2003 Audi TT Roadster. About 2 months ago after not driving the car for a week, I the battery went dead, but I did not get any warning lights. Replacing the battery seemed to fix the problem....

Hi,

Thanks for using Fixya!

Sounds like you have an alternator problem. The alternator may have gone bad due to non use. Some parts inside may have rusted out and got damaged. Better bring your car to your local mechanic and have the alternator checked.

Have a wonderful day.
