hi does your check engine light also come on?

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2009

I just had the same problem today. I turn off the engine but the key won't turn all the way for it to come out. The battery light is on along with all the other lights on the instrument panel.

I had same problem. I would sometimes also leave the door open with lights on inside for 5 mins - then I could not start car, and key would not release.

I had a bad cell in the battery. Replaced the battery and all worked fine.

As a heads up, when I replaced the battery I fixed the ignition problem. However I caused a new issue with my HVAC. It turns out that by replaceing the battery you can de-calibrate the actuators that control your HVAC venting, which ducts are used, and also the temp control. So I would reach out to some more folks on the forums and see if there is a "state" that the ac system should be put in (maybe bi-level or even off) prior to disconnecting the battery. I have not yet fixed my vent issue so I wished I knew about it before I pulled the battery. Good luck and please share what you learn.

How do I get the key out of the ignition switch on a 2004 GMC Envoy 4.2?

Got a new vehicle Joe. Just what you need with the gas prices as high as they are!! Did you get rid of the 1998 Ford Contour?
Foot on the brake and go though the full shift range and then back to park. That should release the ignition lock. It appears to be a known issue. Check out the videos

2004 envoy starts then shuts off and after that I turn the key and it will only crank not start

Could be bad electrical part that works for a bit while cold, but fails as it heats. Coil, ignition module, cam/crank sensor.

Envoy ignition switches are known for having intermittent problems and causing strange indications in the truck. Have the ignition switch changed and I'm pretty sure your problems will be solved.

Key stuck in on posistion of 2004 envoy. Engine could not turn off. Had to unplug battery to turn off. Key still stuck in on posistion. Will not come out

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you spray WD40 on the ignition switch. This will help loosen the gearing, by then you can remove the key.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.
