1980 Pontiac Firebird 4.9 liter Turbocharged v-8 HEI Wiring Help.
I have a Firebird w/HEI ignition, and there are three wires coming out of the base of the Dist. which are Black, red, and yellow. The red and the yellow wires have been cut and spliced into a smaller gauge green wire and appear to have been looped back together, which resulted in a meltdown. The question i have is where do these wires need to be hooked up to? Also being HEI, i have the coil on top of the distributor, and these wires have also been spliced, but once again, i have no reference to where they hook up to other than the black going to ground, and the tach wire. One terminal says B+, which i imagine is Battery positive, the other term says C+, and a seperate connector which reads Batt. Can anyone help me out with the connections i need to make? I bought this car and didn't realize that it was in this condition and cant afford to hire someone to do the work, so i have to do it myself.Any help will be great. I bought the Haynes manual for the car, but with my usual luck, it does not have any engine electrical wiring diagrams at all, and nothing at all pertaining to a TURBO. Thank you in advance for the help, im glad there are people like this to turn to. It is appreciated greatly. Bill
Figured it out, The dist.. base wires simply route through the coil on top of the distributor. Adding the Tach if you want it, and 12 volt switched to the batt. terminal. Black to ground and yellow to yellow.
Thanks for the help. Bill
Ok you have a big problem the best thing to do is find anther fire brid to a look under the hood and see were the wires go.or find one in a junk yard and bye the wireing harnes to the motor. this would be the best way i can see. p.s. let me know how you make out.

You will need the connector/wire that fits into the HEI distributor. It would normally be included in the tach install kit that I assume you don't have.
Wiring diagrams for 1980 trucks are contained in a separate Wiring. Diagram Booklet.... Some of these service operations require the use of tools specially designed .... 1-1/2 Ton. 2-3/4 Ton. 3-1 Ton. 4-1/2 Ton (W/HDSusp). Fig. 0A-3-Vehicle Identification Number ... Right Hand Side of Cylinder Block at Rear of Distributor.
You will need a wiring diagram. You will find one in a Haynes repair manual for your car-about $25-30. You will also probably need it to help keep the car running. Were the wires cut?
ok looking from the driver's side of vehicle at your distributor. There is a power wire (which on most accel or msd distributors) on the right in the first row the wire connection on the left is for a tachometer the row behind it can either have 2 or 3 wires most of the time 1 is usually black and it grounds the ignition coil module inside the cap the other wire/s tranfers power from power connection to coil. A hei or high energy ignition system uses the coil module to amplify the voltage from the standard 30k volts to about 45-50k volts
need to know if its a HEI cap and rotor or not. HEI caps have the coil built into them , an all in one ignition as compared to a external cylindrical coil.
you need to know that. either the distributor cap is a huge hurken thing (HEI) or it has an external coil somewhere or the cap has a ninth distributor hole in the middle of the cap to put a coil. wire.
after you figure out which one it is then you have to either go to www.autozone.com and study chevy wiring or buy a haynes manual for the similar vintage engine. for the external coil I would try a chilton manual for a chev truck before 1972. for HEI anytime thereafter.
I may be off by a few years on the age of the engine. but hopefully you got an idea of what to do, or just google chev engine wiring? and study away.
good luck
