The most common reasons are one of the pulleys is not lined up with the others, or one of the pulleys has a rough groove or edge, or one of the pulleys locks up and burns the belt.

If I replace 2003 chevy venture alternator that is 105 amp and the one I put back is a 130 amp, would the serp belt need to be slightly larger be to clear tensioner pulley that shredded 4 belts?

If the tensioner pulley is “shredding belts”. You might want to look into why. Most of the time belt length has nothing to do with the tensioner shredding the belt.

Serpentine belt keeps shredding on a 01 grand am. changed 2 of the pulleys.

Check the water pump, alternator, and a/c compressor pulleys for play and proper alignment. Replace any item that has play in the bearings.

Keeps shredding belts

Usually the problem is a pulley that is dragging or out of alignment.
The dragging pulley could be an alternator or ac compressor that is failing at random times. Or other accessories.

Why belt keeps shredding

usually due to a bad bearing, or from resistance due to a frozen or failing assemble, as in power steering, alternator, or an idler. The best way to determine is to remove the belt and check all pulleys for play and resistance.

Having trouble starting car. The battery is fine since lights still come on. Found a shredded belt. Not sure if it's the alternator belt. Appreciate the help. Marcia

Don't drive the car until you make sure the belt that is shredded is not the water pump belt. YOU could drive but the engine will overheat and have a more costly problem. Two things, if the lights are working but the car is not starting. It could be that the terminals are dirty on the battery AND if the belt that is shredded is the Alternator belt, the battery could be just down on charge. Do to things (1) Find out which belt needs to be replaced and have it replaced. (2) Charge the battery, maybe a friend has a charger, if so have them trickle charge the batter for at least 12 hrs. Less there's some other problem that should take care of it.
