Engine code p o 1404 - 1999 Saturn SL

Check the wiring for power and ground. Then check the wiring for resistance from the EGR to the ECM. You will need wiring schematics. If this checks out, then there is a computer reprogram that can be done. Dealer.

Check spark plugs , leads coils etc. Give a good tune up.

Google the year make model and code and it comes right up on your computer. I would have posted a link but I am still learning how to use this new system.

EGR valve sensor on the top engine,driver side,not small,

The check engine light is on to tell you that the ECU has detected a fault. The faults are stored as codes. The codes both have to do with a deficiency of exhaust gas going through the EGR valve. You will need to find out if the problem has to do with the valve, a leak, or the circuit.

Ensure the connector wiring pins fit snug at the valve.
A loose pin fit could cause this fault. These EGR's due fail quite often however. I know you say it is good however a solenoid may be failing when hot.

Try and remove the e g r valve,and clean it out,see if it will fix the problem,if it does not,replace the e g r valve.

unhook the battery for ten minutes and hook it back up... that will clear the code... if your stereo requires a code make sure you know it first.

Your best option is to replace the EGR(exhaust gas recurcilation) valve with a new one. For pics and detailed instructions on the process see this link:

Once replaced you will have to clear the trouble code by disconnecting the negative battery terminal, re-connect after a few moments.
