The computer is programmed to work with all devices the car came with. yes, removing the pump can cause this. also, contrary to popular belief, removing the smog pump causes your gas milage to go down.
there is usually a brket under the alternator on those. double check with a belt routing chart if you can find one.there is usually a brket under the alternator on those. double check with a belt routing chart if you can find one.

sounds like your fuel pump is going out. Next time it happens remove fuel cap and have someone turn ignition to the on position not crank. You should hear the fuel pump run for 2-4 second. If you don't hear it come on then try beating your gas tank hard with a rubber mallet while Ignition is in on position.listen for fuel pump to come on. If it starts after this then fuel pump it ?s.
you don't say where the noise is. that is important to give a clue where the issue is. when stopping on the brakes 3 things happen. you press the pedal and the abs pump starts pumping fluid. the second is the brake capilers start pushing on the rotors to slow the car. the rotors are attached to the wheels and that stops the car. so if the rotors are warped you will feel a vibration in the steering wheel when stepping on the brakes. if its your foot feeling the pump working that is normal for abs pumping. you should feel it and holding the pedal will keep it working and stop you from skidding if everything is working correctly
If you\'re talking about a so-called "smog" pump, then yes. And unlike the older ones, say from the 70\'s, you can\'t remove it to improve horsepower and gas mileage. By 1989 the smog pump was so interconnected with the computer controlled emissions controls, removal does nasy things and in most states is illegal.
check fuel pump pressure- fuel filter --air filter --egr valve if carboned up clean or replace and cat converter feel the exhaust if feels restricted may be clogging up
making the light go out will not enable the car to pass smog! it is indicating a problem and this problem will surface when it is checked at smog inspection.
You have 2 issues, and you really need to get the growl issue checked ASAP. What your noise is, is probably a bad water pump. I change them daily. Just did one this morning. The water pump is driven by the timing belt. If the pump locks up, you will ruin the belt, and the car will not restart. Get it checked, replace the pump.
On the P-0401, you have a blockage in the EGR valve, or the tube going to it is carboned up. This is another common issue.
Please let me know about the pump.
A FixYa rating for my assistance would be greatly aappreciated.
Thnaks in advance.
Your vehicle came with a smog pump. It may have seized up (probably breaking the fan belt) and my have simply been removed by a mechanic at an earlier time. It is located below the alternator on your vehicle. If there is no pump but a bracket to hold it, it has definitely been removed. Vehicles will often pass a state smog test without the pump. It only works during engine decelleration (when you lift your foot off of the gas pedal) Charlie
Sounds to be a faulty tank sender unit, these senders use a fine coiled wire on which a brush slides along to vary its resistance. If the coiled wire breaks midway, the only readings will be full or empty. I think sender unit is mounted to internal fuel pump on this model (top of fuel tank) Hope this helps, regards
