SOURCE: 97 Jetta Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow

the air pump is located on the engine towards the front of the vehicle and has apx. 3/4 diameter pipes running to and from it. it is apx. 2 fists in size and it is black plastic. one of the lines on top of the air pump runs to the other side of the engine towards the firewall. at the other end of that pipe is the valve. disconnect that pipe while the vehicle is running. no air out of the pipe means bad pump. air coming out of the pipe means bad valve

SOURCE: The check engine light has be checked several-P0411 error.

If were to venture a guess(and i am) it is either a valve or something that regulates either the rate of fresh air or the direction of it. Check the sec air valve or whatever VW calls it for blockage or sticking.

SOURCE: 2008 bettle secondary air injection sys incorrect flow

the air pump should start when car is cold, if you do not hear a small airplane under your hood, than it is not functioning, if you do, you'll need to do other diagnosis (checking vaccum lines most likely), but being such a new car, a dealer would probably be under warranty.

SOURCE: P0411 code 99 Passat

The secondary Air Injection system, this is basically an inspect and replace broken hose detail. Leave the inlet hose disconnected and start the engine. Listen and feel for exhaust hissing at the check valves. The check valve(s) will make like a gurgling sound as air is drawn in However , if exhaust is felt or heard replace the valve. Hope this works out for ya.

SOURCE: my check engine lite is

More than likely the secondary air injection motor has failed, this is the case most of the time, check all the hoses and verify the connection's and if u find nothing openly wrong replace the secondary air injection pump assembly.

P0410, p2101 and p0014 codes

Possible causes
- Faulty Vacuum hoses damaged
- Faulty Air Pump inoperative
- Air bypass solenoid harness is open or shorted
- Air bypass solenoid circuit poor electrical connection
- Air bypass solenoid leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed
- Air diverter valve leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed
help.jpg What does this mean? When is the code detected?
The secondary air injection system does not detect the presence of air in the exhaust when introduced by the secondary air injection system.
Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine hesitation
P0410 Description
An air pump is used on the vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds the Air pump relay control circuit which energizes the Air pump. The PCM also grounds the Air combination valve vacuum control solenoid circuit, which energizes the Air vacuum control solenoid. Vacuum is then applied to both Air combination valve diaphragms which opens the shut off valves. The PCM enables both circuits simultaneously when Air system operations id desired. When the AIR system is active, then Air pump forces fresh air into the exhaust stream in order to accelerate catalyst operation. The AIR combination valves replace the conventional check valves. When the AIR system is inactive the shut off valves prevent air flow in either direction.

Code p0410b secondary air injection system? what does it meen? what is the cause?

The secondary air injection system is an electric low pressure air pump that blows air into the exhaust stream to help burn up Hydrocarbons (HC), it only operates under certain conditions such as a cold engine. The common cause of failure is that the electric pump motor fails. The pump is sold as one complete assembly and is located under the hood of the car in the engine bay. The part is about $300 and is dealer only. Below are all the possible causes of the OBD2 fault code P0410 Possible causes - Vacuum hoses damaged.
- Air Pump inoperative. (most common cause)
- Air bypass solenoid circuit open.
- Air bypass solenoid leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed.
- Air diverter valve leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed.
Other possible causes and solutions to the code. - Visually inspect vacuum lines for disconnects in the AIR systems and visually inspect for proper vacuum line routing. Repair if necessary.
- Disconnect the air pump hose at the solenoid valve, start the engine and see if there is air being pumped

Keeps giving P0171 reading any help

P0171- System Too Lean (Bank 1)

The adaptive fuel strategy in the vehicle's computer constantly monitors the fuel delivery system to make sure the engine is running at an optimum air to fuel ratio, which is 14.7:1. The computer adjusts injector pulse width to regulate the amount of fuel going into the engine. The oxygen sensors relay information to the Powertrain Control Module (computer), informing it of the oxygen content in the exhaust. This information is translated by the computer, and used to determine if more or less fuel is needed. The computer will then adjust fuel flow (and possibly other related engine operating characteristics), to keep the correct air fuel mixture. This loop continues as long as the engine is running.

A P0171 check engine light code is set when the computer has reached a rich calibration limit and can not add enough fuel to maintain the correct mixture.

Possible Causes:
The following is an overview of P0171 check engine light code possible causes.

Fuel System:

Leaking or faulty fuel pressure regulator
Plugged or dirty fuel filter or lines
Fuel pump weak or defective check valve
Injectors leaking or faulty
Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
Leaking EVAP system components
Faulty FRP (Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor)

Air Intake System

Vacuum leaks
Contaminated, damaged or faulty Mass Air Flow sensor
PCV valve leak or stuck open
Air induction turbulance caused by wrong filter
Oil dipstick not seated
Air leaks after the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)
Oil coated aftermarket air filter

Exhaust System

Any exhaust leak before or near the oxygen sensors

EGR System

Vacuum line disconnected from EGR System Module (ESM)
EGR valve, tube or gasket leak
EGR vacuum regulator valve leaking

Secondary Air Injection System

Mechanically stuck secondary air injection valve

Code P1420 suggests replacing the secondary injection pump relay, where is the relay?

17828/P1420/005152 - Secondary Air Injection Solenoid Valve (N112): Electr. Malfunction Possible Causes
  • Secondary Air Injection Solenoid Valve (N112) faulty
  • Secondary Air Pump Relay (J299) faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Check Secondary Air Injection Solenoid Valve (N112)
  • Check Secondary Air Pump Relay (J299)
The secondary air injection pump relay (J299) is inside the engine compartment, left side, behind air cleaner housing, under a black plastic protective cover you can lift up to reveal it. It's near the brake fluid reservoir beside the odd black plastic cover for the wiring harness beside the shock absorber tower.

Rating my suggestion let's me know how helpful it was correcting your problem. Your rating is truly appreciated and would take the very least of time and effort away from you. Thank you

2002 VW Passat GLS 1.8T throwing two codes: P0171 and P0411. No noticeable loss in performance. Can I fix this myself?

System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.
Note: This DTC is very similar to P0174, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.

P0411 Secondary Air Injection System Incorrect Flow Detected, check the...Combination valve
...Secondary Air Injection pump motor
...Secondary Air Injection solenoid valve
I would take it to a mechanic

1998 328i.. Got a 1421 and 1423 code...not sure where to start...

1997 BMW 328I 2.8L Customer Concern: MIL is on with trouble codes P1421 and P1423, for incorrect secondary airflow on both cylinder banks. Tests/Procedures: 1. Perform a functional test of the Air Injection Reaction (AIR) system. Tee a vacuum gauge into the vacuum hose attached to the diverter valve, located on the cylinder head towards the front of the engine.

2. Allow the vehicle to sit over night. Start the engine (cold) while monitoring the amount of vacuum on the gauge at startup. At temperatures from -10 to 40 degrees Celsius, there should be at least 17 inches of vacuum. At the same time, the AIR pump should run and pump a large volume of air into the exhaust. Potential Causes: A.I.R. Pump
Air Pump Relay
Restricted Cylinder Head
Diverter Valve
Tech Tips: These codes are related to a problem detected in the Secondary Air Injection system. Scan tools with BMW software include a feature to command the AIR pump on and off. The pattern failures for these codes are the AIR pumps due to leaks in the diverter valve and moisture or condensation in the AIR pump.

Possible fix but not all items. Just areas to look at:
Confirmed Fix - A.I.R. Pump - A.I.R. Diverter - A.I.R. Pump, Air Injection Reaction Diverter (AIRD) Valve - Air Injection Reaction Diverter (AIRD) Valve - Check Valve, Secondary Air Pump - Diverter Valve Vacuum Lines
