1997 mercury mountaineer overdrive off light(amber light below speedometer) The works correctly except when the headlights are on. When I turn off the overdrive with the headlights on the "overdrive off" light does not come on. The OD off button function operates correctly. Any idea how to fix this?
SOURCE: NO OVERDRIVE
I had a similar problem with my 98 mystique when i bought it used. I had no overdrive and was lucky to find a honest transmission shop that found the problem. In my case the overdrive was unplugged. They plugged it back in,cleared the computer and changed my tranny fluid and i was good to go. You should be revving about 2400rpm at 65mph. The other thing you can check is to make sure that the wires that go from the overdrive button are not broken off or coroded.

Go to the local parts store, have them check the codes (they will do this for free usually). It will tell you what sensor needs to be checked/replaced. Once the part is replaced, it will clear on its own. They can also reset the code, but it will come back if the trouble persists.

remove the photo sensor module on the top of dash, looks like a tiny plastic eye or lens.

it means the catalyst is worn out, the efficiency is monitored by sensors, when the Cat falls below a certain reading or "threshold" the code is generating telling u that u need a new catalytic converter.

I have a 2003 Mountaineer that had the same symptoms. After doing some research, me and Google decided it was the Blend Door Actuator. It is a fairly difficult job due to having to take pretty much the whole dash off, but I did it myself with minimal experience. I included a few links.
