My mercedes 2.6i 1989 e190 automatic only reverses no forward

This is the classic symptom of a failed reverse clutch pack, sorry you will need an overhaul.

If its automatic. Torque converter consists of 3 components. Impeller(bowl like dome with fins inside it for fluid displacement), turbine(same as above), stator(located in the centre; like a fans blades). Fluid flows and reaches optimal flow to give drive to the wheels. If there is no fluid, then there is no drive. Check gearbox fluid level. Or maybe the gearbox broke, or the diff broke or a cv shaft or a cv joint.

if you are driving your vehicle forward and not in reverse this means that your transmission reverse has failed, which can be caused by many things, one being the clutches, they may be burned, and can cause this problem to happen, so you will need to replace the entire transmission, please check a reputable mechanic for repairs.

Most likely the tumblers came apart inside the ignition switch.

If the reverse gear has gone out, it is time for a rebiuld. The next that will happen, is you will loose probably 2nd gear and then all your gears. These are not difficult transmissions to do and should not be too expensive no matter what they tell you! You can tell them to stop staring at the badge on the trunk and concentrate on the compnent. Look at your vin and what are the first 3 numbers? Chances are it is 126. This is your body designator Great car,, great body style. selector cables need re adjusting ,possible an outer sheaf is broke

Auto matic or standard ????If standard, the clutch is shot, if automatic the clutches are slipping may be low on transmission fluid, check first.

i am really sorry to give you the bad news but the trans has failed, the problem is the forward/directr drive clutch pack has either lost hydraulic application pressure or the clutches are just worn out, either way u will need an overhaul

Reverse clutches are burnt. Clutch material is getting into valve body causing late shifts since valves can't move. transmisison will have to be overhauled. wish i had better news. sorry
