In most cases smelling gas inside the car comes from air entering the venting system from the engine compartment. Just a few drops can cause a strong smell. And a small leak may be tough to find.
It could be excess fuel going out the exhaust pipe, but your check engine light should be on if that were the case.

SOURCE: petrol smell inside of car

Gas or anitfreeze are both petrolium based prducts. Check for leaks on both. Antifreeze has a sweet smell and is either green or orange if using Dex Cool (look in resivoir to confirm color or if its low) to diffrentiate the 2.

Testimonial: "Thanks, never thought about the antifreeze! Having said that I think its petrol going on the smell which I happen to like, allbeit overpowering cheers"

Question moved to model category.

Try cleaning the Throttle Body and MAF (mass air flow sensor). If that doesn't fix it, an auto electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer can diagnose which sensor is causing it to dump fuel in 'Short Term Fuel Trim'.

Hi i have a strong fuel smell from inside the cabin of my 2005 ford bantam 1.6 xl (rocam) i have checked everything from the seals on the injectors .to the fuel lines and even all the firewall grommets...

Hi Jacques,

Being fuel injected, it would be spraying out if it were an external leak from the fuel pipes as they run under pressure. If definitely a petrol smell, I would check the top of the fuel tank where the pump fits- is it worse / same with a full tank?

Not to question you but is it a fuel smell or an exhaust gas smell? Reason for my question is that the rocams have a common weak spot of the exhaust flange sealing ring where the exhaust front pipe meets the manifold. They become worn and porous and start blowing under load or when accelerating as the motor tips back.

I hope this helps!

Petrol smell in side the car

Possible there is leak or a joint fault in the fill cap, the fuel tank filling hose clamp , the fuel line to the fuel pump , fuel filter.
Now since petrol is highly volatile a small gap can make the gas smell into the cabin. Please start your check from the tank to the pump and the return fuel pipe, checking for leaks which can be easily tightened or a faulty fuel line changed.

My mini 1973 gts is miss fireing the moment you go over 3000 rpm and i have a huge petrol smell while driving, what can i do?

I'd check the fuel line for holes, splits and bad connections. Then the carburettor, have any of the gaskets failed, is there any petrol leaking. Finally are any breather pipes blocked or disconnected.

Smell of petrol inside the car

I had a similar problem with a 92 when I replaced the float/level sensor in the tank. Did you recently change the pump or sensor?
Check the tightness of anything you may have loosened or opened. There is also a line that usually drains water from the depression in which the filler cap sits. If you have a bad cap and even a minor overflow or spill from a fill-up, gas could leak into the trunk and once absorbed into the carpeting it is very difficult to remove the smell from the matting. I power washed mine with solvents and water based detergents, three times and let them air dry each time, finally placing an odor absorbing chemical in the trunk to solve the problem. Good luck hope this helps.

Petrol leak

Easily! The whole rubber surround can be replaced with a new one. The parts are cheap, but you might want to get a mechanic to do it anyway. It's not usually glued in or anything, just press-fitted.

Every car i've ever seen with a bad fuel smell and/or fuel leak up in that area has been a result of a cracked rubber seal.
