Fluctuating oil pressure gauge.

My check engine light has come on. I was low on oil, actually I am overdue for an oil change, so I added 2 qts to the engine and filled it up. The van does not feel right when I am going 55 mph or more and I let off the gas. It jerks, jumps and then starts to decelerate. My oil pressure gauge fluctuates and when I step on the brakes the gauge drops to 0, below the red line. Do I have an oil pressure problem and what could it be? And how do I fix it? If not that, Do i just get the oil changed and the light will go off. Or should I just drive the van off a cliff or in a lake or something? Please help....

First, you indicate the oil light comes on when you hit the brakes. Do
you mean it comes on the instant you hit the brakes even while
traveling well allong or when you finally come to a stop at idle? The oil light does not come on at all. The oil pressure gauge fluctuates while driving along; when I come to a stop, it drops as far as it can go. And then it sounds as if it is running rough.

Does the oil light come on at idleDoes the oil light come on while braking. If so, are you sure the oil level is full?

The Jerks, jumps when decelerating sounds like things are loose in the
drive train and it is wrapping up on decell, maybe motor mounts,
    subframe mounts or the like.

I just got the oil changed and the check engine light is now off.

Well, I had the oil changed and seems to be doing much better. Check engine light has gone off.

You appear to have more than one problem.

Two quarts is about half the capacity. The pump was probably starved of lubrication and is failing.

If that's not expensive enough, you may now have a problem with a damaged engine. You may want to just put that money into a new vehicle.

I don't think the car would have enough power in its present condition to get high enough to reach a cliff, and driving it into a lake would not be environmentally sound. Besides, the fine would not be worth it.

The cheapest and easiest maintainance that anyone can do on a car to avoid expensive repairs is still checking the oil ever 1000 miles (filling if necessary!) and changing it every 3000.

Oil light on after engine warm-up on idle

this means a mechanical gauge test is required to check actual pressure warm idling if low below 20 psi then the oil pressure pump relief is stuck open or engine bearing are worn

I've had sender replace and all points between there and oil gauge verified OK and all the stepper motors on instrument cluster replaced but still get fluctuating oil pressure needle and warning s

If you check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge and the pressure is steady, the problem would be in the gauge on the dash if you have replaced the sending unit and there are no problems with the circuit.
The mechanical gauge could verify a problem with the actual pressure in the engine.

I have a Ford Expedition 1998 5.4 engine ... when starting the engine oil pressure light goes to a minimum ... I changed the oil pressure sensor, but obviously this is just for the lamp, where the second...

don't rely on the oil pressure gauge in the dash, it's not a real oil pressure gauge. It's just a glorified "low oil pressure" lamp. It only has two readings - "normal" and "low", nothing else. The "sensor" in the block is actually just an oil pressure switch which you replaced.. which only has two states, on or off. If your gauge is fluctuating between "normal" and "low", it means either that the switch or wiring to the switch is bad, or that the oil pressure is so low that it barely makes the pressure switch turn on. If it's the latter, then it could be either low on oil... not! Or something clogged, such as oil pickup tube, filter or oil channels. Other causes for low oil pressure is a failing oil pump, or worn out journals or main bearings, which basically means the engine is worn out.
Hope this helps a little. Could get it checked at a shop with a mechanical pump gauge to see what your true pressure is. Thatll tell you if it's the switch light is bad

2005 grand Prix oil pressure light an dinging comes on

1. Check your oil level. If oil level is not ok, correct oil level and find out why oil level was low and correct the problem. (Leaks, bad PCV, Burning oil due to severe engine wear, nobody has bothered to check it for the last 3000 miles, WAY overdue for an oil change, etc.) If oil level is ok, proceed to next step.

2. Remove the oil pressure sensor and install a manual oil pressure gauge. Run engine to verify low oil pressure. If gauge shows that the oil pressure is low, overhaul or replace engine. If oil pressure is ok, replace oil pressure sending unit and retest.

Oil pressure gage fluctuates;red oil icon stays on; alarm bell keeps ringing. I added 2 qts of oil. no change.

Hello,I can help you with your buick oil pressure problem. This is the 3800 engine correct? Is engine noisey? Would be best to install a mechnical oil pressure gauge on your engine to see if you are actually losing oil pressure or we have another problem. this tells you exactly what the engine is doing. If you do not have one the cheapest thing to try is replacing the oil pressure sending unit.if sender is defective it will cause your problem. This sending unit is above the oil filter.

My oil pressure gauge goes up and down then stays in the LOW, also I have no power... my truck will only get up to 40MPH... is it possible the oil pump? ?

Not sure about the oil pressure problem. May be the gauge or sending unit. Does the engine start ticking or knocking when pressure goes low?If not you probably still have good pressure.
The loss of power may be a stopped up catalitic convertor. I've had one Frontier that this has happened to.

Oil gauge is fluctuating...on Low when at a standstill...moves up when i hit the accelerator...i just added 3 qts of oil...and i also have a coolent leak????

That is a good sign, it is working, my oil pressure fluctuates like a tachometer, at idle it is low, like 20 lbs, then when I 'm cruising, 35lbs, but it goes up and down when you pump the gas. The pressure gauge is reading the oil pressure at the top of the engine, it will show 45 lbs with only 1 qt of oil in there, it is not an oil level gauge. You might have an oil light buried on the dash somewhere that will light up if the oil gets too low. ,, Now about that coolant leak, it should have nothing to do with the oil pressure. Is it a hose? Radiator? Joint at the top of the engine? Where is it leaking, and what is it doing? Does it over heat? Or did it overheat? Is there oil floating at the top of the radiator? Does it blow steam out the exhaust? Does it have coolant or just water? Check it out. hope this helps.

Oil light comes on

this is an oil pressure light, most likely the sending unit for the gauge is defective, but I do recommened a shop hook up a oil press test gauge and verify u do't really have low oil pressure, then if that tests ok replace the sending unit on the engine.
