How are you checking the spark? tough the old plug? Did you check the spark from the coil? If not do this first, be careful it can bite, if the spark is hot aka blue replace the wires and rotor they both have resisters in them that can go bad. If not get an other plug wire any will do does not have to be from a VW. place it into the dis. cap and check it with out a spark plug, if the spark good the wires are bad.
Reminder turning up car can fix most problems.

SOURCE: No spark from coil pack

The most common reasons for them going out are not using dielectric grease properly when installing, and from washing your engine.

I believe this was a huge issue with Volkswagen vehicles

My 2001 hunduy accent stops running after 5 minutes- new fuel pump, plugs and wire .filter ?

Are you letting the car idle? If the car is idling and dies, could be a bad voltage regulator...
When it dies, does it show a bad battery light? or does it just cut off? If it just cuts off, you'll need to check and see if the car thermostat is sticking/ sensor has gone bad.

It could be a faulty temp sensor causing the car's computer to shut itself off. Either way- I'd suggest going to a reputable mechanic and have them bang on it if you can't do the simple n easy checks.

Engine light on. went to auto parts store, they diagnosed number 2 or 3 cylinder not firing. prior to this i changed plugs and wires. then i changed the coil. the engine light went off and the gas economy...

Hello mikew564.The first diagnosis was number 2 or 3 cylinder not firing. Once you changed the coil, the check engine light went off. When the light came back on again, did you get it diagnosed again to find out if the problem was the same?... 2 or 3 cylinder not firing????

First of all, there is NO extra wire/ground on the coil/ignition wiring (see images below). The spark plugs and ignition plug wiring can be checked for arcing, corrosion, resistance and can be checked for cracks in the insulators or worn electrodes (and spark gap) by a competent mechanic.
If you are having the same issue (2 - 3 misfire), there are several techniques for eliminating the plug wires or spark plugs. Spray water on the plug wires to see if they are arcing. Swap plugs from cylinders 2 & 3 with cylinders 1 & 4. If you still have a 2-3 misfire, check/inspect/examine the coil connector pins & coil harness to the coil(s) themselves.

I think that the coil packs has installed wrong because you said that the problem started when you replaced them... so i think you should re-install.
