In case you weren't aware, you can buy an adapter that plugs into your harness in the area in front of rear bumper, up under vehicle, that will do all of what your trying to accomplish, with a whole lot less work, and they are not that expensive, plus you don't have to touch wires in behind panels etc. Does that sound good to you, or do you still want other instructions? Also, does this trailer have brakes that need to be hooked up as well in this plug? Sorry for all the questions but, want to make sure we get it right the first time. If no brakes on trailer, all you need is right signal, left signal, & running light working, and we need to know if your brake lights are same bulb as your signal lights.
Hi PJ, Is this the original sound system for the vehicle? if it is then contact your local Mitsubishi dealer with your Vin Number and Registration Document/title they will have it on file.
Good Luck!

first of all you should always use a wire harness when installing a unit into a vehicle you should never cut the factory harness but guess you already did so here is the wire diagram for your car hope this helps http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Mitsubishi-Wiring.pdf
You have a short to ground inside the dashboard harness somewhere. You need to trace the harness from the fuse panel to the radio. Most likely a chaffed power wire.
