White smoke on cold start up

Good news and bad news.
All cars & truck with gasoline engine can emit white smoke on start up.
This is water vapor evaporating .
You have a problem if you have white smoke after the engine is warm, unless you are way up north and the outside temperature is really cold.
Also, keep close watch on the radiator to be sure you are not losing radiator coolant ( perhaps a leaking head gasket ) and the motor oil on the dipstick (should not be "milky" or the color of coffee w/cream)
as that could indicate water in the oil, which is really serious.

Has the vehicle been overheating or losing coolant? The symptoms you describe could point towards head gasket trouble (and other faults). Often, the exhaust fumes from a car with a failing head gasket will smell 'pungent' and 'sharp'.

Check the oil on your dipstick. If there's a greyish/cream sludge - sometimes referred to as 'mayonnaise' - this points towards coolant entering the oil system via a leaking head/head gasket.

Also check your coolant - is there any evidence of engine oil in it? Although the mayonnaise on the dipstick is usually the tell-tale sign of gasket problems.

If you suspect the head/head gasket try a special sealant such as:

I have BMW 318 / 05 plate. The engine oil cap has cream colour gunk on it. The oil dipstick has just a tiny bit of cream gunk ... Why is this happening. Please help.

This is water foam caused by infrequent oil changes, poor quality oil (Quaker State, Pennsoil), or possible head gasket leak.

Don't know where to poor my oil in my 1981 ford f100. there is not filler tube

there shouldn't be a filler tube, just a dipstick tube for checking the oil level. to put the oil in the engine, there should be a oil cap on the right hand side valve cover. if the dipstick tube isn't there, you definitely need to get one from a parts yard or store, you can be losing oil from the dipstick hole that goes to the oil pan...

Where to put transmission oil at

As per the owners manual,

"1. Pull out the dipstick(the red transmission one)

2.Using a long-neck funnel, add enough fluid at the dipstick hole to bring it to the proper level.

It does not take much fluid, generally less than one pint(0.5l) Do not overfill. "

The transmission dipstick on the 3800 engine is located behind the engine towards the drivers side. It is right next to the brake fluid reservoir. Hope this helps.

Wont start

losing water for months, but no eveidnese under car. Either being blown out exhaust or it's in the oil. Pull out oil dipstick and check if oil if foamy or too thin. That would mean the presents of coolant in the oil. And that happens from bad headgasket.
This could keep from starting depending on how freezing.

Hi,
Something is wrong with the head to engine connection. The white smoke is water burning from the sylinder(s) and the cream colored oil means you're getting water in the oil... this isn't good. You'll have to remove the head and re-assess this connection. Make sure the gasket is correct to all the water jacket ports and upon reinstallation, follow the correct torque sequence for the head.
I hope this helps, though it's not good news... sorry.

Oil cap

Yes this is a potential problem,

1.) moisture from not changing your oil often or car was sitting.
2.) Head gasket is blown causing coolant to blow through into oil.

When you pull dip stick is there white creamy substance on the dipstick

Most likely the thermostat is sticking. Get the system flushed (get that rusty liquid out of the system), replace the thermostat & put in new coolant. Should fix it.

if you dont see antifreeze leaking anywhere,its the head gasket,check your oil dipstck,the antifreeze is probally mixxing with the oil as it leaks thru the gasket and will give the oil a milky white color on the dipstick,if you start to see white smoke from the exaust then its leaking into your exaust port,either way head gasket and change as soon as possible,you dont want it in the oil cause you can seize the motor

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but i think your head gasket has failed causing the oil & water to mix in the engine. usually, the water enters the oil causing the milky cream liquid (check the under side of the oil fill cap for this same creamy liquid) and you wind up adding coolant since it gets low.

if the coolant is not getting low, then it may not be anything to worry about. in the colder months, BMWs have been known to display this creamy liquid on the oil cap. it disappears when the weather gets warmer. BMW has a service bulletin on this.

have a compression check done on it to see if this is truely the case. i hope i am wrong. and 1 pint every 2-4 thousand miles is not too bad.
