2001 4 door sedan with 75K miles. Top on dash has cracked due to overexposure to sun,otherwise car beautifully maintained and runs very well. Front end vibrates while at idle or above idle while the car is in gear only. Once movement starts,forward or reverse, the vibration immediately stops. If shifted to neutral while at idle the vibration stops. All fluid levels fine, no overheat, no leaks, no funny noises. Believe it may be some kind of dampner which can not handle the torque at idle but handles the speed while in motion. What do you think? Could I fix it myself? Will it cost a fortune?. When you are in gear at idle with your foot on the clutch you have placed an axial load on the crank which is pushed forward in the main bearings against a thrust bearing. I suspect a failing thrust face on this bearing as it only works under a clutch release load. The only other point that is under load is the clutch throw out bearing but if that is failing you should be hearing a tinny type of rattle when you have the foot on the clutch

A bad tire, a loose wheel, a loose tie rod end, a bent rim, (tire
balance at higher speeds), a piece of rust or whatever caught between
the rim and brake rotor, or between the brake rotor and hub. Have you done anything to it prior to this starting?
I had this issue and it was one of my winter tires about to blow out, showing signs of weakness.. hopefully this helps!

first rotate the tires see if there is a change. If that does not have a desirable effect there may be a worn wheel bearing,take note if the sound or vibration gets louder as you turn a corner, try left turns as well as right turns if the noise increases it is a wheel bearing.

Check to make sure both headlights are tight,,,when it rattles at idle go feel the headlight and hold it and see if the noise and vibration goes away,sometimes the headlight has too much clearance and causes a massive vibration,,if thats not it try...loosening all the motor mounts and rock the car back and forth and them retighten them,it reseetles the mounts and sometimes fixes the issue,,also check the lower engine and trans mounts for wear.

Thank you Bill.....I forgot one important spec. This is an automatic transmission. Sorry for the ommission.
What a difference that makes. Now only in idle means that the transmission is spinning the torque converter all the time which in turn is spinning all the gears in the transmission. As they are planetry and sun gears on bearings and are actuated by clutch packs and bands the problem is narrowied down to bearings on the input shaft of the transmission. Check the oil for particulate and burning Dark brown instead of cherry red.
