2001 ford explorer sports trac dies when stopping. it'll shake really bad before it dies. when it dies, the only way to get it to go in drive is to reverse it first then shift to drive. i can keep it from dying when stopping but only when i manually shift down to first. and when taking off shifting up one gear at a time. i've tried changing fuel filter, and it worked for about a day then it went back to its old thing of dying when stopping. i cant seem to find anyone to help me.... i would appreciate it
I had the same problem. I would get to a red light or stop sign, and my tach would go to 1000, then 500 then, if I didn't rev the motor, it would die. It turned out to be a vacuum leak. A rubber elbow shaped 1" line on the top of the motor, toward the front, but underneath the black plastic linkage cover (3 screws to remove). I don't hear that well, but I had a friend listen, and he could hear the sucking/hissing sound. The rubber elbow slides over two pipes; one that is going to the front of the vehicle, then turns right and connects to a second pipe going to the driver's side. If not this line, look for others. Good luck!
