Overheat and accelerating automatically

The temp gauge has shown the car is overheating a couple of times in the past two weeks. However, it quickly goes back to about the midpoint and the engine is not overly hot when I stopped the car. After the gauge shows overheat, the engine starts acting funny and revs when I have foot on the brakes. Also is difficult to start after this. The high speed fan was staying also staying on when I shut off the car

Time to change the thermostat if you not already have done so. This is the cause of most overheating problems, although a good radiator flush may solve the problem also. The fan will stay running until the engine coolant reaches the proper parameters and then shut off.

SOURCE: I have a 1993 940 Volvo that is overheating and I

Hi there, I had EXACTLY the same problem, with my 92 940.
It's the intercooled 2.383, and it took a while to discover that the coolant was leaking from, what seemed like, an Enormous hole.
But I only discovered it straight away after filling it up, after a good short run.(while there was still coolant in it:)
Put stop leak in, which worked, instantly.
I speculate, that, you may have warped the head, which would indicate your loss of oil pressure.
It all depends on how overheated it got.
Not good news, I know but hope it helps.

I have a 2003 pontiac sunfire that runs hot and then is fine for a couple weeks . have put it in the shop several time .Any ideas?

Difficult...

Running hot would come down to a blocked radiator, a collapsed hose, a faulty temperature sensor or a cylinder head/gasket problem.

it could also be the gauge or even a bad earth on a temperature sensor.

Does your car exhibit any signs of overheating .. steam .. boiling radiator ... rough running?

It's strange that it runs fine for a couple of weeks and then runs hot. To me that suggests a temperature sensor/thermostat problem coupled with the outside air temperature.

What did the workshop suggest?

Temp gauge possibly not working

Locate the temp sensor in the coolant system and take a good look at it. Make sure it is firmly fixed in place and the wires to it are clean and not corroded. If its ok, check the connectors to the dash for damage.

If this truck is not overheating, then I would suspect the temperature sensor, if it is overheating then this must be repaired first. The sensor should be mounted in the intake manifold. Hope this helps, let me know

The cars temp gauge goes up and down, and looses heat. I am thinking a bad thermostat or lack of antifreeze/coolant. Is this a correct assumption?

My mechanic has had my Silhouette for two weeks for the same problem. Engine Tempurature is running at 195 degrees when the gauge is pegged on overheat. Normal operating temp for this van is 220. So it is not overheating. Had the cooling/heating system flushed and refilled, bled and topped off. Still the gauge is up and down like a yoyo. Still looking for answers.

is it acually getting hot or is it just the gauge on the dash saying so? a quality scan tool can show you what the coolant temp sensor is telling the pcm it may differ from the gauge.

Car overheating

Good chance. The temp sensor in the radiator could not be reading correctly. Or the fan control module is on its way out.

Chevy Venture Overheating

Almost sounds like the same symptons as my van. Turns out the guage was not the problem. The van was in fact running hot because the electric radiator fans were not kicking in when the engine was hot. I replaced the relay switches for the fans. There are two of these in the fuse panel under the hood. There has been no problem with overheating since
