My 1999 plymouth neon will not keep a charge. The battery, alt., brain, and battery terminals have all been replaced at the same time however the car will not keep a charge and the battery light comes on when driven about 1/4 mile and the car is completely dead. Also, when charging the battery it will not take a charge unless the battery is unhooked from the car.

It is the alternater as the alternater is responsable for charging the battery when the battery need charging.It should run you about 60 dollars fro the alternator plus about 50 for the labor

have the fault codes read first
just because there is no engine light does not mean that faults are not being recorded
items that can shut down the engine are
cam/crank position sensors
immobilizer system
bad terminals on the battery
bad battery
faulty alternator charge circuit
loose fuse in holder
faulty ECM unit
on the big wire on back of alternator will see a black rubber in between wire this a fusible link this is blown, go to part store an replace it w/new one .
loose belt, if it is worn then it will not keep the battery charged...
loose ground wire or bad ground wire...
possibly bad alternator, not keeping the battery charged enough, that would explain the stalling, and loss of power.. hope this helps you.....
Most cases, the battery light come on when the alternator is bad. Basically, it's not charging the battery.
Best to have the alternator checked out by the auto-parts store. Most places will do this for free.
My Neon was doing the same thing. After hours of trouble shooting it turned out to be my positive battery terminal. It looked good but after replacing I have not had any problems.
The best way for you to do this is to go to a autostore and buy the repair manual for a 95-99 dodge/plymouth neon. That will help you better, because you have to pull apart the front of the motor (passanger side). Its not as hard as it sounds. 90% chance your engine is a sohc. If needed i can give you the complete directions for doing this but easer for you to see it in the book.
