94 Previa rwd and 180000 miles. Today my trans started jumping back into the #2 gear at around 35mph. Eventually it wouldn't go to the 3rd gear at all. I noticed on the shift indicator that the "D" indicator and "2" were both lit green. I stopped and fooled with the shift lever and was able to get the normal D light only. After that it was fine for the drive. I'm guessing this must have a remote control activator of some kind. Is it possible that there is a wire chaffing that would cause this? The trans seems to be working well otherwise.

Hey Anon, Yes, drive it to the tranny shop..plan to leave it... sounds like you are in for a rebuild.. this is typical for GM RWD transmissions.. I have seen TOO many do this same thing,, (I have had TWO in for this... vehicles I inherited that were not maintained)..GM transmissions on RWD's must have the fluid and filter changed every 50K - 75K and a complete fluid exchange and filter replacement every 120K -150K MINIMUM for them to last..usually cost around $1200 - $1400.. sorry.. Good luck!
You don't have 5 speeds
You have 4 speeds and converter lock-up
Fluid Changes are good and are done every
30,000 miles, not more than that on any vehicle
Fluid only cools and lubes, doesn't repair thing
if it slips, new fluid makes it worse
What you do is go to a trans shop and have
them check the cable adjustment from the
trans to the throttle.
And have them understand the issues and road
test with you in the truck
Most likely a fluid change and the new Dexron 6 trans fluid will cure this issue, make sure to do a full service, fluid and filter. Note, Dexron VI replaces all previous Dexron fluids and I know from personnel experience it works great, longer trans life and smoother shifts and less problems like yours.
Honda transmissions,as well as most other overdrive transmissions, should be driven at all times in drive 4,or the overdrive position, with the exception of severe driving conditions, such as towing a load, extremely hilly terrain,or long uphill grades, the trans should be taken out of overdrive, and placed in the drive 3 position. This is to prevent the perpetual shifting back and forth of the trans from 3rd into 4th,back to 3rd,back to 4th,back to 3rd,that would eventually damage both the 3rd and 4th gear clutch discs and components.
trans is toast
