GAP/DWELL
Use this procedure to set ign timing.
The distributor used from 1975 and later, is equipped with either a single or dual-diaphragm vacuum advance unit, depending upon the locale in which the car is sold, due to emission control regulations.
The ****** section of the dual-diaphragm unit is located on the distributor side, with the advance section located on the opposite side of the advanced mechanism. The ****** section is activated during the engine idle and deacceleration cycles.
At idle, the basic ignition timing is retarded to 5 degrees ATDC by the vacuum ****** unit. Basic timing is checked with the rubber plug removed from the advance/****** unit the vacuum lines are not removed and plugged as on the single unit diaphragm equipped distributor. To adjust the timing:Attach the timing light and tachometer according to the instructions that came with the light or tachometer.
Locate the timing tab line on the front of the engine and the notch on the crankshaft pulley. Mark them with chalk.
Remove the rubber plug on dual diaphragm unit, or remove and plug the line on single units.
Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature, adjust idle speed if necessary.
Shine the timing light at the crankshaft pulley marks. The marked line should align with the pulley notch.
If the marks do not align, loosen the distributor mounting nut and rotate the distributor slowly in either direction to align the timing marks.
Tighten the mounting nut when the ignition timing is correct. Adjust idle speed.
Replace the rubber plug (dual diaphragm) and check the retarded timing. Adjustment is made by loosening the two diaphragm mounting screws and turning the phillips adjusting screw as necessary to bring timing into specs. Shut OFF engine and remove timing light.
Point spec's, DWELL 49 TO 55 Degrees gap, POINT GAP IS NOT GIVEN ONLY DWELL, BUT 0.30" IS A GOOD STARING POINT, YOUR DISTRIBUTOR USES AN ECCENTRIC SCREW FOR ADJUSTMENT. HERE IS A PICTURE.
I would also adjust the valve lash. the specs are:
intake 0.08mm
exhaust 0.18mm adjust all valves with a cold engine.
valve adjust sequence chart.
could u please rate me took 30 minutes to compile this info.
