SOURCE: transmission problem
Two possibilities, one the valve body needs to be replaced. This is very common, and the usual symptoms are delay into reverse, and sometimes second also. The other is a loose input shaft nut. This has become more common on the 2000 to 2002 models, im not sure why though. The nut can be accessed by removing the transmission end cover. The input shaft is the one on the left, it uses a thin wall 23mm socket. The old nut should be removed and discarded, install a new nut and torque to spec (yes this is very important) then reinstall the end cover which is actually harder than it sounds. In the case of the valve body you need to drive normally up to 20 miles to reset the transmission adaptive settings. The input shaft nut does not require this, but it is a good idea. To clear the adaptives you will need to disconnect the battery for about 10 min.
SOURCE: I have an automatic 1997 Ford ranger problems putting into gear.
as you are shifting you feel the lever snap into gear wich that is where that gear actualy is but you are seeing the indicator on the column is not on the chosen gear that means the indicator on the column needs some adjustment to match the indicator with the lever position
SOURCE: 98 mustang GT transmission locked in reverse
my 98 is at the ford dealership right now for same problem except mine was stuck in reverse >>> ford just told me my bushing on my drive linkage broke and needs replaced . . . .they told me thats what caused my car to shut off while driving and also wont allow my starter to turn over to turn on the vehicle . . . told me to go get a linkage bushing from a junkyard or order a whole new linkage system of my mustang which with installation only ran me 150 bucks !!! hope this helps in some way
SOURCE: car will not shift into gear
Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.
