I just bought a 1997 Mercury Sable it was a private sale. Once I got it home the check engine light was on can't remember the code but it when I looked it up it was the canister purge valve. Spent $80. for the part installed it and now I have po 401 and po443 codes coming up. I don't have any money to put it in a shop for them to fix it. But if you can explain what these codes mean might help me understand these codes better. Thank you!

    Vehicle power circuit.

It will be battery voltage. All items that actually perform a function(solenoids, valves, injectors, etc.) have 12V power to them and the computer just controls them by supplying a ground. All sensors have a reference voltage,5V supplied to the by the computer and it looks at the return voltage to see how things are responding.

My 97 mercury sable 3.0 is very hard to start once started runs really rough for a second then smooths out

My first guess would be a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve.
Also one of the injectors could be leaking fuel into the cylinder when you stop the engine.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ?

Bought a 1997 mercury sable today, guy said it needed a starter, charged dead battery and replaced starter. It fired right up, was driving it home it died, oil light, battery light, and check engine light...

Try checking the altenator. If the starter and battery were gimpy, the altenator may have a blown regulator too!. It sounds like there is a short in the system causing this problem. Most likely the altenator or component in the charging loop. WF

Mercury sable 2001 duratec engine DOHC I get check engine light and diagnostic code PO401". Any suggestions?

Barring any vacuum leaks, P0401 is indicative of a bad EGR valve. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck.

Your transmission torque converter lock up clutch is not unlocking, that kills the engine and is the cause of the OD light flashing.
