I recently purchased a (used) Chevy Aveo 2004 hatchback, car is in decent condition etc etc. Hadn't noticed until a few days ago (hadn't attempted to use it prior to) that the lighter & 12V outlet in the car didn't work. Checked the fuse box, no fuse installed. So I bought and installed it (15A - checked manual), seemed to work fine. Drove off and suddenly noticed my charger wasn't working anymore. So I replaced the fuse (it was blown). Started the car, was working fine, let it run for a moment no issues, so drove off again. Noticed the fuse was again blown, so I replaced it a third time. This time, I sat and waited 10 minutes to ensure there were no issues. As soon as I released the e-brakes (parking brake), the fuse blew. I heard the "zap" sound as it blew, so I can confirm that the fuse blew at the exact time the parking brake was released. At this point I am at a lose as to what the problem is.
The parking brake (as far as I'm aware) is not electrical in anyway, and the only relation to the fuse is that the 12V outlet sits right beside the parking brake. Other than that, I can't find any reason why the two would be connected.
Basics about the car - it's a stick tranny, not auto. Everything else in the car works fine, no issues thus far aside from this one.
Any help/suggestions/ideas would be awesome, as I'm not mechanical in any way whatsoever, and am clearly baffled and out of my league here.
Thanks much;

It sound to me like the lighter plug itself is loose and when you released the parking brake wiggled the plug enough to short out and blow the fuse . check to see if the plug is loose .
Testimonial: "Hey Steve; Sorry about the late reply, but I did manage to fix it! Your response was helpful, I checked to see if the brake was wiggling it loose, and found that the wire for the 12V plug was actually being sinched(sp?) by the parking brake, causing the fuse to short circuit. I rearranged the wire out of the way, and haven't had a problem since! Thanks much; Dusty<>"

Hello Zoeno
Well in my experience it sure sounds like a bad wire in the wiring in the door jam. I have seen that happen before from the door shutting and opening all the time, I think there is a way to check it, if you put a fuse back in it and try using the passenger door to get in and out. If the fuse don't blow again after using the other door (drivers side) you have found your problem. I don't understand why GM would even change your fuse box for that it doesn't make any sense, I have been a shop owner for 11years now and a mechanic for 20 years and have seen many problem with electrical systems and when a fuse blows it is usually a bare wire touching somewhere in the system, also there is a relay for just about everything in that car, and could be a problem too. I know it may be a inconveniance to go thru the other door but it should help figure out if its the wiring in that drivers door or not. I sure hope that helps you out some, Thanks for using FixYa.com Bear001
SOURCE: 2004 Chevrolet Aveo Brake lights not working
A couple of days ago my brake lights on my 2004 Chevy Aveo wouldn't work, so I attempted to remove the lamp covers to check the bulbs. Also, before this my shifter would get stuck in park and could only be released by pressing the unlock gadget next to the shifter. Back to the brakes...Well, you open the trunk and remove the two screws just like the manual said, but it was very hard to pull off. There's 2 prongs holding the other half of the light on. The lamp will come loose by prying it (very hard). You think the cover will break, but it'll come loose. The bulbs were all OK.
After much frustration and internet info, the STOP LAMP SWITCH, GM#96436331 ($9.30 at Chevy dealer), which is located under the dash and has contact with the brake pedal, was defective. Once replaced, both my brake lights AND SHIFTING problems were cured. So if the brake lights suddenly don't work or you have problems getting the vehicle out of park, check the switch by pushing the prong (end that has contact with brake) of the switch in and out. If it doesn't retract smoothly...that's the PROBLEM. Good Luck.

check linkage on top of transmission and make sure it moves while engaging shift lever. You may have also left a light on while doing work on van, check all interior lights that may still be on.

I have had a couple of things happen in my lighter plug, coins, spills that have built up corrosion and shorted it out. I did just have to replace the wires from the plug by the brake as they came loose and hit the ebrake. check to make sure it was wired correctly and not loose.
