Will not start in Park, then will not start.

1997 Jeep Cherokee will not start. Changed the computer and it would only start in Neutral. After driving it for 1500 miles it would not start. Checked it after two days, it started. Drove 5 miles, it would not start. Jiggled everything. It did not start. Still won't start. Mechanic says its the computer, the computer checks fine. What ???

Was the neutral safety switch checked on the transmission to be sure its working?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Has anyone checked the neutral start switch? Random no-start problems are generally caused by this. But, when you try to start it, if it cranks but does not start, it's not the switch. In that case, code tests and wire tracing are in order.

1997 jeep cherokee sport will not start with key. Replaced ignition switch but will only start when the relay is engaged from the PD box.

This could be a faulty park/neutral safety switch. This is a switch that is used to determine whether the car is in park or neutral before allowing the car to start. This prevents the starter from turning while the transmission is engaged, which would cause the car to jolt forward. It's usually an easy fix, located on the side of the transmission. Remove the wiring harness, and carefully remove the switch, they tend to be brittle. You can replace it with a new one, or clean your old one (if it stayed intact). Just disassemble the switch, and clean all the old dirty grease off the contacts, and use a good electric grade lubricant. Good Luck!

Park jeep overnight and now it won't start, changed fuel filter and relay checked fuel pump which worked fine, the problem is that it will crank over but that's it, you don't hear the fuel pump kick on,...

sometimes the neutral safety switch goes out and thus it doesn't start... I had that go out in my 96 jeep cherokee sport 4x4... changed the fuel pump out and then found out... I had it changed so I don't know how to do that part.... anyway hope that helps

Will not start while on park after driving for ten

Your dealership can read the codes entered into your car's computer every time it malfunctions. Same problem as yours, however, also gets worse, back up lights won't work, sticks in park (in the gas stationing) (very embarrassing), will only run with foot on gas, etc. It was the "neutral safety switch". $500 fix but runs and starts perfectly all the time.

My 1995 jeep grand cherokee limited is not starting, changed ignition coil, rotter and cap gave a full tune up and still nothing happend,is it the computer?

There is a known problem with the 'neutral starting switch' that has occurred in two of our several Jeeps. Try starting it in neutral and park both and 'jiggle' the selector while you are doing it.

Can I tow my 4X4 auto grand cherokee behind a Mtr Hm? I will put everything in N (transfer case & Trany)

I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel
