We have a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. I drove the truck this morning and couldn't get any sound to come out of the speakers. My husband drove it last night and he said the radio and cd player were working fine. He stated all he did was turn the volume down. The display is showing, you can hear the CD player working but there is no sound. I have checked all of the radio settings.
GM had insturment cluster problems 2003 to 2006 . Inside is a part called a stepper motor , this stepper motor controls the gauge position .
How to repair GM Instrument Cluster Speedometer Gauge Stepper
Beside's the stepper motor issue there can also be a problem with something called silver migration , this has to do with the solder used in the insturment cluster . This can cause a number of electrical problems most people would not even think possible .

My '03 Avalanche has the Bose stereo with in-dash 6-CD changer. I am having problems with the instrument cluster. The guages don't always appear to register correctly. This started happening in the winter when it was below freezing outside. There is a recall, but I am out of warranty.
Anyhow, the oil guage was reading off the top. To get it back to zero I had to start, shutoff, and restart the truck numerous time quickly. (If I start the truck and shut it off quickly the oil guage drops 10psi each time.) But unfortunately after the oil guage was set now there is no sound from the speakers. The stereo worked... I was able to change sources from AM to FM to CD and all looked good. Just no audio. As I was reading postings on the internet my wife took the truck shopping and when she came back the audio was working. The only thing I can think of is she used her key fob which changed the settings on the radio. I had tried shutting the truck off and restarting several times and this did not fix it. I was just about to check the amp fuse when she got back and it was working.
