Hi Mike.

You have 2 issues, and you really need to get the growl issue checked ASAP. What your noise is, is probably a bad water pump. I change them daily. Just did one this morning. The water pump is driven by the timing belt. If the pump locks up, you will ruin the belt, and the car will not restart. Get it checked, replace the pump.

On the P-0401, you have a blockage in the EGR valve, or the tube going to it is carboned up. This is another common issue.

Please let me know about the pump.
A FixYa rating for my assistance would be greatly aappreciated.
Thnaks in advance.

SOURCE: I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA CAMRY. I HEAR A ROARING NOISE

sounds to me like its a cv joint. if the rubber boot gets damaged in any way, dirt gets in there and really does some damage. check the boot really good. if you dont see any holes or anything it might just be the wheel bearing. id take it to a mechanic and ask him to just look at it. usually they wont charge ya.

SOURCE: Replace 2003 Chevy S10 V6 Exhaust Manifold

On the studs on the bottom be sure to soak them with a good penitrating oil over night. Then on the removal if you feel like they are binding work them back and forth. They may break but you should get new studs with the new one. On the head side just be carefull, if you break a bolt off in the head you have real problems then. Not really complex just use your head and don't be to forcefull.
Good Luck

SOURCE: Accelarating from 25 to 40 MPH - a "rattle" in exhaust system

Had my y-pipe replaced (bad cats) and the bolts at the y-pipe flange where it attaches to the exhaust manifolds started to get loose and I go tthe viberating (tinning) noise. Took it in the first time and they tightened everything up but it seems it's doing it again so I'm going to try to fix on my own. Just wondering how much of a pain it's going to be to get to the bolts and what size...

Honda civic 03 1.6 petrol has intermittent rattle; ~2000rpm in 2nd, ~3000rpm in 5th, UK sites suggest EGR valve malfunction or blockage; engine runs OK otherwise, power fuel consumption normal

Engine rattle?Remove the metal heat shield at the front/top of the exhaust and check the exhaust manifold for a crack. They all crack at some point and do rattle when the crack becomes large.

Ticking noise coming from manifold

Ticking noise coming from the manifold? There are two types of manifold....1. Instake manifold and exhaust manifold. Please indentify and apply as needed.

Intake manifold
1. Double check the nuts and bolts around the intake manifold if you worked on it and had it serviced.
2. Spark plugs loose. Yes!! I've seen this before and it comes the rear of the manifold..very confusing.
3. Check your valves and have them adjusted. (This will require a trained and qulified mechanic).
4. Check your motor oil and power steering pump fluid.

Exhaust manifold
1. Check for loose nuts and bolts.
2. Check the O2 sensors connections...some models have 2-3. They are the sensors sticking into the pipes.
3. Your catalytic converter may have a defect. If possible, remove it and shake it to determine failure. (I've seen and experienced the so called honeycomb inside it breakign apart.)
4. Check the exhaust manifold heat shield if applicable.

When I accelerate, there is a tin can kind of sound. The sound ceases when just cruising along. Only hear it on acceleration? Any tips of what that could be??Thanks!

Have a 1997 T100 SR5. 146,000 miles. Had the same problem. It's the heat shields over the exhaust manifolds. The welds break and they rattle. I used high-temperature exhaust putty and c-clamps to hold them steady. Works great. (Don't have access to a welder)

Noise coming from near the engine, friends have told me it may be a cracked exhaust manifold.

Yes, that is possible. Or exhaust manifold gasket. I would need more details on area of noise, and do you see or smell exhaust from that areas? Let me know , glad to help you, thanks Mike

Where are the four O2 sensors on a 2003 Montero Sport? Is $300 reasonable to replace the two upstream sensors?

According to the service literature I read, the 2003 Montero Sport with the 3.0 or 3.5 L engine does not have O2 sensors listed even in the maintenance schedule. The 2.4 L engine has it on the exhaust manifold though.
---
However, the following lists the par, though for before or after the catalytic converter:

http://www.partstrain.com/store/index.php?VN=4294967180+4294966587+4294964143+&Nr=AND(universal:0)&N=0&Ntt=Oxygen%20Sensor

---
I think that $250 to $300 is reasonable if the Oxygen sensors are stuck in there with rust and the threads are preserved by the technician. Oxygen Sensor replacement can be tricky.

Good luck on this repair.

Ticking noise underneath the car approximately midway.

The sound you hear is the metal parts of your exhaust system and catalytic converter cooling down. Some cars are louder than others but the sound is perfectly normal.

Loud grumbling noise, sounds like it is coming from the exhaust pipe that is under the drivers seat. When the vehicle is sitting in park and you press the gas it gets louder

its possible that you have a cracked exhaust manifold and you should be able to tell when the engine is cold or in the morning as it warms it goes away if thats not it is your car got the same power it always has
check flow out of the exhuast and see if its pluged most likly in your catalitic converter or hole in the muffler and last but not least check the exhuast dounut at the manifold collector and exhaust pipe they do go bad good luck

Problems w/ power getting to the motor

Check your cyalytic converter and your entire exhaust system for damage. A blocked up exhaust will give you a loss of ower as will a clogged or damaged cat con.
