What color is the light, this sounds like the emission system warning light.

that is the engine emission malfunction warning light, and no 99% of the time u will feel no change in the way the engine runs. go to any Kragen or Autozone and ask them to run a trouble code test on your truck, it is free, right down the code they give u and post it back here, there are over 100 trouble codes that can turn this light on.

All fluid levels are full, all guages good, engine light stays on

The check engine light is on because the computer has detected a fault in the system. It could be a sensor, wiring or bad connection. You have to get the codes read to find out what could be causing the problem. Most parts stores will do this for no fee at all.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Check engin light stays on. Starts fine runs

Most common cause of engine lights is either an air fault such as air flow meter or air mass sensor. there are others but if the car is driving fine then most likely an air fault.

Check the air sensor sometimes they just need a clean up rather than replacement.
Let me know if you need more info.

My son is telling me that the car can not be running more than 15 minutes before the gauge shows that it is hot... could it be the water pump or the thermostat

15 minutes is about right to heat up an engine, are you saying it's getting too hot? water/antifreeze level? water pump maybe. Start it from cold let it idle until it's hot, does the fan come on and the guage go down then the fan turn off? If it does and fluid levels are good it's working fine

Yellow engine check light stays on

take the car to dealership and get them to cancel the fault memory of the engine control unit. Then if the warning light comes back on you will need a full diagnosis check to establish what is causing thefault.
