Hi - I was driving my 1999 V70 tdi when the engine just cut out. I drifted to the side of the road, although all the warning lights came on as usual and the engine spun on the starter, it would not start. I have tried several times - but to no avail! It is almost like I've ran out of diesel, but there is half a tank left. Thanks for any help!
SOURCE: ABS WARNING LIGHT ON VOLVO V70 1997
ABS light comes on with ignition then should go off when you start the car.
If abs sensor does not turn off after disconnecting the battery, then
there is a real problem, a faulty sensor or ABS malfunctioning.
When the ABS led comes on immediately after you start the car and stays on usually is one of the relays.
The main one is called surge arrester relay, if it is faulty usually there have been an
overvoltage.
There should be two more, usually located behind the black plastic cover of the ABS.
Testing and changing the faulty relay can fix the problem.
If light turns off on startup, and comes back on when you reach some
speed, usually you need to check the wheel sensors. You test them
unplugging the sensor located behind the wheel and testing it for
continuity with a multimeter.
Use Haynes manual to find locations and specs of relays.
Contact a qualified mechanic if you cannot fix it yourself, problems with ABS may compromise safety of the vehicle.

I had the same problem with the 2000 v70 XC I bought in Dec. 08. I replaced the battery, then the antenna ring (around ignition; part of the immobilizer system), and bought new keys as sometimes the chips in them do go bad. Also, if you have a key for another car with an immobilizer system on the same keyring, take it off. The multiple signals can confuse the immobilizer system. I think the antenna ring may have been one issue as, consistent with what repairpal stated, I got a crank and the engined turned over for about a second or 2 one time and then it died. The antenna ring (and the new keys) were relatively inexpensive. That worked for about a month and then I got no crank at all. I had the starter replaced, but in hindsight I think that may have not been the problem. I think the problem was the starter not getting juice. The starter was a very expensive solution. About 2 weeks after having the starter replaced, it wouldn't crank again. I took it to a Volvo dealership and gave them the history. They found a corroded wire near the starter and, at least until now, that seems to have done the trick. Labor on the wire was about $100 at the dealer. Searching Volvo forums for those who have had a similar problem, I have found that others have had the "bad wire" problem. If you are told to replace the starter by your mechanic, my advice to anyone having this problem is to have check to make sure the starter is getting juice before replacing the starter as replacing the starter (parts and labor) cost me about $650-$700. If they find that the starter is not getting juice, they can check for wire corrision starting at the starter and working their way back.

No.
You should purchase the factory repair manual. With current dealership repair rates at 90 to 120 dollars per hour, It should pay for itself the first time you use it.
If you want a cheaper manual, Chilton's is good if you are technically proficient, and Hayne's is better if you aren't. Both can be purchased at Auto-Zone, NAPA, etc,
SOURCE: Volvo V70 wont start - suspect main relay - where is it located
My volvo v70 has three places for fuses and relays, one under the bonnet, one on the end of the dash board on the drivers side, and one the boot on the left hand side you may find what your looking for in one of these places
