How to check transmission fluid and how many quarts do it take?
22's answer as to location is correct. Check the fluid after the vehicle has warmed up and with the engine running. Check your manual for fluid type if any is required (should be type "F"). Do not overfill as it will not help. If fluid is a qt low you ahould check transmission lines going from radiator to the tranny as there is a leak somewhere. Also look around the transmission pan for leaks. Slipping of the transmission is the most obvious indicator of low fluid, stepping on the gas but the transmission doesn't push you faster. Hope this helps. GT

oh boy! good luck with that one! your right, there is NO filler tube (some idiot imagioneers not so bright idea at Ford), the only way to fill that trans. is through the filler/drain plug, it serves BOTH purposes! stupid? yes MOST DEFINATLY agree! you'll need to purchase a kit from the dealer (of all places) along with the use of (oops),
a compressor and a brake bleeder/filler kit in order to fill the case itself. You can atleast fill the torque converter manually before you install a new, or re-install your old one. I highly recommend replacing it as they too are a problem child as well (clattering noises from internal broken parts inside it). Sorry for the sarcastics, but this trans. is 1 of Fords engineers much BIGGER screw ups! Good luck! oh, p.s. make sure you use ALL new Mercon V fluid ( obviously the "new" trans., but the converter as well.

There is no dipstick on a manual transmission. On a manual tranny, you check the fluid by pulling the fill plug on the side of the transmission. The fluid is supposed to be even with the bottom of the fill plug hole. Gently stuck your finger in there and on a fully serviced trans. you will feel the fluid on your finger tip. On an auto transmission the dipstick is on the passenger side near the exhaust manifold close to the firewall. Also you fill the trans thru the dipstick. Make sure you use the proper fluid and the correct amount.22

Does not have a dip stick.
Start the vehicle set park brake
In the side if the transmission oil pan a bigger bolt with a small bolt in the center.
Remove smaller center bolt trans fluid should drip out at a fairly constant rate if not its low.
Hope this tip helps.

1. When refilling, remove dipstick to provide adequate venting and allow oil to flow into crankcase.
2. With ENG at operating temperature, shift through all gears. Check fluid level in PARK and add fluid as needed.
3. Fill to no more than 1/4 to 9/16" below fill plug hole.
4. Fill no higher than 9.5 mm or 3/8" below fill plug.
