SOURCE: Terrible Front End noise
I would agree with the hub bearing solution. I also have a 2001 Cavalier and recently replaced both hub bearings. The sound is quite loud and does get worse the faster you drive. Once I got mine replaced, I couldn't believe how quiet my car ran. My dad works with a guy who does a lot of work on Cavalier's and has noticed that first the left hub bearing goes bad, soon followed by the right after about 60,000 miles.

i think what you are talking about is the front differential. you will wanna put gear oil in it. the correct weight would be found in your manual.

It sounds like you have a bad c v or constant velocity joint. Look under the car next to the wheel look for a rubber accordian type unit, if the rubber is torn or lose the grease has escaped and damaged the joint. You can replace it yourself, but if your not mechanically inclined would say take it to a shop.
SOURCE: 2004 chevy cavalier makes a ''knocking'' sound
This could be any number of things. It could be your CV axle going bad, your tie rod joint has gone bad, your lower ball joint has gone bad. More than likely it will be your CV axle. What you need to look for is rips on any of the boots for these parts. The one that has the rip will more than likely be your problem. Just check for grease coming out of any of these parts and you will find your culprit because it has dried up and is causing the knocking sound. Let me know if you have any further questions.
