Hello, i have a BMW 320D (2003), which seems to give out a lot of gray smoke from the tail pipe, the cool-lent levels are ok it does not over heat, cant see any pools of oil on the road have check dipstick for oil its normal (oil indicator on dash does NOT light up). it has got the power to pull (accelerate fast) but i have noticed it to be weaker then what it was few months ago, smoke does smell heavy diesel/oil, i drove it this morning with very little smoke but other times it leaves a big cloud behind it seems a bit intermittent, motor oil on dipstick is almost black, any ideas of what may be the cause. Many thanks in advance.
Hello Kamal Ahmed,
Black smoke is going to be your favorite kind...
It is caused by OVERFUELING...
2003 is a recent enough to be telling you if you have any associated engine codes... (get them read).
Sorry we don't have any 320D in the USA or I would attempt to point up some good prices).
Over-fueling is usually
DEFECTIVE injectors or a COLD START issue.
Water would be putting out WHITE smoke
(big money) ... Just make sure you keep
the appropriate MIX of ANTI-FREEZE...
to avoid WHITE smoke... (electrolysis).
Carnac the Magnificent
I'd get a compression check done...

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!
