Hi, We have a standard 2001 VW Beetle w/ automatic transmission. On 04/15/2008, the car was taken to the local dealer when we were notified that the brake light switch had recalled. The dealer replaced the switch, under warranty; no charge. Last week we noticed that the rear brake lights were again not working. We took the car back to the same dealer yesterday, 03/07/2009. The service guy at VW told us that because it had been less than one year, and less than 15,000 miles had been driven since the brake light switch had been replaced, there would be no charge if the switch was once again the problem. So, we thought, of course, what else could it be? A bad switch equals a short in the line to the brake lights, which equals no charge. Go ahead and do the work. After they checked the car, they said that the brake lights were burned out by an electrical short. But, they insist this has nothing to do with the brake light switch that was replaced last April. We had to get the work done, and VW charged us $186 to get the brake lights to work again. The bill states "bulb sockets internally shorted, replaced both rear brake light bulb sockets due to internal short, replaced bulbs to prevent repeat repairs" Now, isn't it logical that a bad switch is the reason for the occurrence of the short? We are thinking of taking them to small claims court if they do not go to mediation or arbitration and agree to do the brake light work under warranty. How strong do you think our case is? Especially considering the specific previous electrical recall on this VW Beetle and its overall bad electrical history? Thanks B. Hoover

It's very unlikely that both brake light sockets would short out, and if they did it would blow a fuze.  Is water leaking into the lights.  I would suggest that you find another repair shop.
Because of the small amount of money, small claims court would hardly be worth the effort.
Your brake light switch is under the dash near your brake pedal.  If this happens again I would buy a aftermarket switch as a replacement.

also refer them to TSB group 46 04-01 date Feb. 17,2004

There were three such recalls on that brake switch. i am suggesting it was improperly installed or that the switch malfunctioned again.

Where can I buy a shift cable boot for a 2001 beetle cheap?

Every VW dealership has a junk yard affiliated with it. In Seattle we have Carter which has a major junk yard for spare parts located closer to Arlington. You can try calling there or your local dealership. Otherwise try a transmission shop and compare with online parts dealers.

2001vw beetle automatic transmission is not shifting.

Sounds like a shift solenoid . See if you can order them separate from the valve body. I would call a vw dealer and talk with the service department.

Hi. we have a VW Beetle 2002 2.0. the trunk is locked a week ago. Help please.

If the car has an electrical lock, please refer to your local volkswagen dealer. If it's mechanical, you could be able to open it from inside, then check the mechanism for errors.

Where do I check the transmission fluid in a 1996 volkswagen jetta automatic transmission?

VW's are notorious for not having a dipstick in the transmissions. The units are sealed, and can only be check by the VW dealers.

Sorry, my 1998 VW Beetle had the same problem.

2001 vw beetle automatic transmission will not shift into overdrive at highway speeds. why?

I have a 2001 Beetle, the transmisson seen to have a pause and then engage when driving normaly and it's worst on the hills, after driving a distance it smells some kind of quemical that is not oil or gas, the beeping sound and the engine light on the dashboard goes on when stopping (may be the motor) and the temperature blue light goes on constantly. Are all of this related? to transmission? separate issues? The dealer and 2 other private mecanics don't give a perfect diagnosys they are all the time guessing. What's wrong? please advice.

My sister has 2001 vw beetle. She discribes a slipping problem with transmission. Is there a transmission oil dip stick ? What weight oil is recommended x-mission?

If this is an automatic transmission the modulator valve could be bad, if not, there is nothing to do but a rebuild. (OUCH!) If it is a manual transmission, a clutch, pressure plate and through-out bearing replacement and your done. The pressure plate could be resurfaced. Lot Less (ouch.)
