At about 55mph loses power, the gas pedal is almost all the way to the floor and rpms are at 2 grand. If you push the peadal to floor it kicks into passing gear and picks power again, but starts losing power again.

Clogged fuel filters can cause these symtoms. restrict the flow of fuel. this could cause a lean 02 code.

Trans Solenoid Pack or Solenoid related,is more likely. You can go for a ride with a professional scanner attached, and watch sensor data. Now IF the vehicle, has never had the trans fluid changed,at least three times in seven years, you may have bigger issues, internally. Hope not!!

This year of ranger had a few flaws, In one case, a break power booster was robbing the vacumm, you can test this by plugging it off and seeing the differance, but you will have limited brakes. This model year had a problem with a vacuum leak on the manifold. You can check these in many ways, but please don't use starting fluid. The rear of the manifold usually on the drivers side where it seals to the block.
Also, in 2 other cases a cracked head has gave me the same problem. It is caused from a loss of vacuum.

It could very well be a restriction in the exhaust like a stopped up cat converter. I doubt if it is a torque converter, that may make it slow to get to speed but shouldn't effect hwy speeds.
You can check this vehicle for an exhaust restriction very easy by going to the DPFE sensor and measuring exhaust back pressure with a vacuum/pressure gage. It will be either silver or black in color will have 2 rubber hoses hooked to it going down to metal tubes that hook into the exhaust. It will have a 3 wire connector with the color of the wires being BN/WH,BN/LG,OG. Disconnect one of the rubber hoses from the sensor and hook the vacuum/pressure gage into the hose. You should have less than 1 psi at idle, then press accel to wide open throttle and take a reading,it should be no higher than 3-4 psi. Anything more is an exhaust restriction.
