Ive got a 96 model jeep cherokee laredo. The gear stick is stuck in park and the button does not depress in.The reds come on but theres not a sound from the engine like if u had a dead battery. The only way to get it out of park is to turn the ignition press the break and depress the button same time but the gear stick doesn't catch on the other gears.

Do the brake lights work ? The shift release works through the brake switch and if it stops working it will not release out of park .

Hi Guys!
I work in a transmission and torque converter remanufacturing plant and have seen this many times! I hate to tell you that your transmission is shot! There is metal in the fluid and some of it got caught in a solenoid not letting fluid through to shift the gears. You will need a rebuild! About $2500 dollars. Of course if you in Pittsburgh, Pa. area I could do it for about half that. Any questions e-mail me at [email protected]

I had the same problem today - January 30th 2009. what i did was spray some WD40 in the cylinder and sprayed the key with WD40, then inserted the key in the ignition, then "lightly" and i mean "lightly" tapped the end of the key with the end of a wrench (my brass hammer was not in reach) 3 or 4 times. removed the key and then inserted again - then "all was well. the ignition turned, car started, and i will now wait till the next time something goes wrong with the car...

SOURCE: 2000 jeep cherokee laredo - Check engine light

Could be a vacuum issue or the modulator..

The modulator tells it when to shift and is controlled by vacuum presure..
Check all vacuum lines that rum from the tranie for cracks, spits etc..

it could also be a sensor..

Hope this helps !!
Please rate me good ;o)

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo won't shift out of 1st gear.

Question edited for spelling of the model names.
Question moved to model category.

Are you in Limp Mode? Is the Check Engine Light on?

Some ideas here including pulling fuses. You probably need an auto electrician though.

I have a 07 jeep Laredo that won't shift can you help.

is it a auto or stick?? a/t or M/t box, (m= manual)
my guess auto as most auto drivers never seen or heard of stick.
so>?...>>
if auto , that is complex. there are 100's of symptoms on those boxes.
wont shift tells me what
its stuck in 1st gear, and reverse is dead too.??
or slips at times.

read the FSM first?
or get it serviced,? ever rebuild one? i bet not.
A/T box (WILD GUESS)

check levels yet, per book ,DO NOT GUESS>, read.
its a grand Cherokee, laredo. aka. WK jeep.
there are 3 automatic transmission used. name one.
and 2 transfer cases (yours stuck in neutral>?) NV-???
the pages that cover this are
page 5189-6243 in the shop manual, read the on car tests.

2005 jeep grand cherokee laredo transmission shifting problems

  • A/T or M/T (auto or stick, gee)
  • if A/T is this the 42RE box>? are you in DRIVE? or 1 or 2 gear.
  • does rpm rise above 3000 rpm > at your attempt? if not ,its a bad engine (weak)
  • is the shift linkage even shifting correctly (movement top and bottom)
  • check levels yet. (and for pink ./red AFT not black-metal flake
  • change the filter yet? or skip service. at 50k miles. ?????
  • check all fuses yet>?
  • using a basic OBD2 scan tool are there any tranny DTC errors?>
  • does the FSM stall test pass? in 1st.? and reverse?
  • if stall fails, slips , then tranny bad. if not its really stuck in 1st gear.
The TCM commads the gear change, there is no valve body brain.
the TCM shifts to second with good inputs to the TCM
if the TCM sees bad inputs it will tell you, SCAN IT.

Sorry, but it is recommended to go to a service and make a diagnose. Seems that the automatic transmission has a fault.

96 grand jeep cherokee is jammed into park

the simple fix might be the park interlock cable. this locks the shifter unless you press and hold the brake pedal while selecting gears. I've seen and replaced a few of these on several chrysler/dodge vehicles.
