My car battery died out when I left the lights on. I gotta jump, and the next day it cut off on the highway. I bought an altenator from the junkyard and the car died. Its a 2001 Ford zx2, how do I install the altenator?

I'm not a car mechanic, but, it sounds like you might want to check the fuse to the ignition switch, and, if that fails, it might be a problem with the Start Safety Switch on the transmission. Good luck.
I would say change the alternator out. Start with the simplest and cheapest factor first. Without the alternator keeping the engine running its hard to put it any gear.
A quick way to test an alternator is to start the engine, and disconect the battery. if the engine dies, it was running off the battery. It should cotinue to run, if it does not your alternator is not working.
in order for the car to do conventional jump, you'll need to leave the booster cables hooked up for say, 10 minutes at least. you may have left lights on accidently.while the other car is attempting to boost yours, look for anything you may have left on,headlights,an interior light on,maybe a door left cracked open.the cold weather wreaks havoc on car batteries. your battery may need replaced. autozone, advance auto parts, both of these parts places replace car and truck batteries free.they also can check your battery to see if does need replacement.they can also tell you whether you may have an altenator thats bad, your car dieing issue may be your altenator bad, when your altenator goes bad,the car will run until the battery is drained completely. if that is the case, you can take your battery out, have it charged, then drive to a close repair shop for altenator replacement.hope this helps, and as always, thank you for choosing fixya.com
disconnect all the connections to the battery and clean them , also clean all the grounds, check the alternator to engine ground, and engine to body grounds, what you describe is indication of a bad connection and applying the brake is enough to to lower the voltage needed to power the ignition circuit, brake light use a lot of juice
My battery went dead. It was 5 yrs old it was time to change it. It also went dead. Bought a new altenator and installed it. OK now. Had a problem with the engine with the engine cutting out on the highway. Put some injettor cleaner in the tank and it took about 2-3 days and it`s fine now.
